It’s an absolutely stunning mid-summer day. The river, like many of you, is taking a rest day. It’s not quite glassy in front of my window, but I’m sure we’ll see glassy periods today. You’ll find epic conditions for SUPing, kayaking, swimming, wakeboarding, and doing whatever else people do when it’s not windy. But don’t you worry – the wind will return tomorrow. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Expect light wind from Viento eastward today with a chance of E 12-15 at Stevenson and Rooster late this morning, fading back to nothing by the afternoon. Tomorrow starts off calm, but you’ll want to finish your no-wind tasks early. The wind picks up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier by noon, and picks up to gusty 25-29 in the afternoon all the way from Steven’s Locks to Arlington. Tomorrow’s wind, it should be noted, is driven by the approach of a weak weather system. This has the potential to shut the wind down after 90 minutes, or at least knock it way back, at many of the beaches. The places most likely to see long-lasting wind tomorrow are Stevenson, Avery and Arlington, but you’ll find good wind for a period pretty much everywhere.
Monday afternoon suffers the effects of another weather system moving through BC, but the morning and midday look great, and you’ll still find wind later in the day. Expect Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier at 24-27 on Monday. The wind picks up to 28-32ish midday from Stevenson to Doug’s, filling in at Arlington late. It’s quite likely that we’ll see the wind back off early in the afternoon due to the effect of that BC weather system, so get out in the morning if you can.
Tuesday looks like 21-24 early and 26-30 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’d like to talk a little bit about Rooster Rock this morning. Rooster Rock is not called Rooster Rock because the rock looks like a Rooster. Oh no. The rock, to put it politely, looks like a penis. A big, hard penis. You’ll want to look at it from the west to confirm this. In the First People Chinook Jargon, the rock is called ‘iwash’, meaning penis. Lewis and Clark also noted the phallic nature of the rock. However, times changed, prudishness came into fashion, and cock rock was renamed ‘Rooster Rock’ in order not to offend the public.
Sometimes we are oh-so worried about offending people that we modify our speech and mince our words. We do things that undermine us in order to please someone else. We sacrifice too much in order to keep the waters calm.
But guess what? We learn a lot when the water’s bumpy; having to face things that make us uncomfortable (the word ‘penis’ for example), helps us be more comfortable in our own skin. So, next time you’re beating around the bush and avoiding saying something uncomfortable, try a different approach. Say this out loud with me right now: “I’m really uncomfortable saying this, but Rooster Rock looks like a penis.”
See, that wasn’t so hard, was it?
Gorge Weather Forecast
Today is starting off cool and cloudless, and cloudless it shall remain. However, the cloudless weather will be so hot this afternoon that you’ll want to be clothes-less. Expect temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 90’s this afternoon. Zero wind, zero rainbows. Tomorrow starts off with temps in the low 60’s and ends up in the mid 90’s. Sadly, it will get muggier and muggier as the day goes on. Light wind tomorrow morning gives way to strong wind in the afternoon. No rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy with temps in the mid 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
The roads are still there and so are the trails. The road biking is epic right now: cool temps, no wind. You can expect the same tomorrow morning. Just finish up early, because the cool temps will disappear quickly. Also, tomorrow looks muggier than today, so today’s the best bet for a nice spin on the pavement.

Upcoming Events
Today is Saturday, and there’s supposed to be US Windsurfing National races at the Event Site today, but it’s a day better suited for wakeboarding. Perhaps tomorrow. Big Winds had scheduled a downwind SUP event for today, but that’s been canceled. The window for Huckfest, the big air kiting event, includes today, but that’s not going to happen. The Wild Woman women’s trail marathon, 50k, etc., not being wind-dependent, is still on.
There’s a 8am trail run in Post Canyon today and a 9am beginner women’s bike ride at Mt. View Cycles. Looking ahead to tomorrow, there are four free yoga classes: 9am at Crossfit Hood River, 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm (Christian-themed) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Root Down. There’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm in Mosier tomorrow, and a casual bike ride that leaves Mt. View Cycles at 5:15.
Have an awesome day today!
