Saturday. Swim, people, swim!

I’m looking out my window and I can see the fishing boats at the Wonderbar, hoping to get some of the 6264 Chinook and 2182 Steelhead that made it past Bonneville yesterday. Yep, looks like fishin’ season is on now! If you’re hoping to get a piece of the action, I’m sure that Drew from…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Today will be a good day for it, because the wind will stay pretty light. Expect easterlies at 10-15 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks (Stevenson and Cascade Locks) this morning. The wind wll go calm midday and switch to west 5-10 from Steven’s Locks to Hood River after 2pm. It’s possible that models are on the light side, given this setup. There is a chance we’ll see westerlies at 12-15 late this afternoon, but I wouldn’t plan your day around it. If you’re bored today, wander on down to the Waterfront Park and check out the Gorge Paddle Challenge stuffs.

Saturday’s westerlies ramp up overnight as the heat low shifts to the east and a trough with accompany weak cold front approaches from the north-west. Sunday morning starts off with west wind at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. We’ll see the wind quickly build to 26-30+ from Stevenson to Arlington by late Sunday morning or early afternoon. Given all the dynamics in the atmosphere, it’s possible the wind could be fluky at the “usual” spots – Swell, Rowena, The Wall. If that’s the case, try Stevenson, Hood River, Mosier, Avery, or Roosevelt. There is, by the way, a work party at Roosevelt Sunday morning at 9am, so get out there and help with that before the wind picks up.

Monday sees a nice strong marine layer combined with a weak weather feature. Offshore high pressure won’t be all that high on Monday (which seems a little ridiculous, given that weed is legal in both Washington and Oregon, but I guess the offshore high doesn’t smoke weed, maybe). Anyway, the combination of those factors will give us 17-20 in the morning and 23-26 in the afternoon, strongest from Swell to Mosier early and Steven’s Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. Tuesday currently looks like W 10-13.

Random Morning Thoughts

A couple of weeks ago I had an informational interview with a potential internship site. Because my heart is in mindfulness and somatic-based therapies, I wasn’t all that excited about the site going in, but I wanted to check it out anyway because I’d heard great things about the work environment.

Once I started talking to the supervisor, I started to get really excited. He told me about the opportunities available, and I realized I’d be exposed to a huge variety of situations. Suddenly this internship site was sounding really cool. I love variety! If I hadn’t gone, I would have no idea that much of this work would appeal to me.

We tend to live our lives from our past. If we tried something once, or formed an opinion about something, we’re unlikely to reconsider or make another attempt. We forget that our tastes and our fancies change. We don’t give the world’s opportunities a second thought once we’ve cast them aside based on an initial experience.

So next time you hear yourself saying, “I don’t enjoy X”, stop for a moment. When was the last time you tried X? In what context? Maybe things have changed in your mind-body. Maybe it’s time to give X a second thought. You’re probably a different person than you were the last time you tried X. Maybe the new you will really enjoy it. You might just find that X is awesome. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Wow. This morning is just awesome. With temps in the upper 50’s, you’ll be able to lock up cold air all day long, so get those windows and doors open right now, and close them up as soon as you’re chilly. Highs today will be in the upper 90’s. Light wind. No rainbows. Sunday cools off quite a bit. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Monday starts off in the mid 50’s and warms to the low 80’s. Moderate wind. No rainbows.
