It’s chilly out there this morning, just in the mid 50’s, and that’s got me thinking that maybe we entered the time of year when the Gorge needs a little more time to wake up before the wind turns on. I know I certainly need a little more time to get out of bed these days, with sunrise closer to 6:30 than 4:30! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Anyway, our Saturday morning gradients were a bit lackluster, with .04 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). Also lackluster this morning is the Pacific High, at just 1024mb. Expect morning west wind in the 10-13 range from Viento to Swell with single digits everywhere else. It looks like we’ll see afternoon westerlies at 15-18 from Swell to Mosier, for sure, and likely to The Dalles as well. Stevenson has a lot of clouds this morning, but should also slowly build to 15-18.

Sunday sees a trough of low pressure move off to the east, and that should set us up for stronger gradients. Expect morning westerlies at 13-16 east of Hood River with 10-13 west of Hood river. By the afternoon, we should have gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 20-23 at Arlington.
Monday currently looks like it’ll start off with 13-16 (I’d say 16-19, but the night chill will probably tamp down wind speeds) from Viento to Arlington. We’ll see a quick build to 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles, with 24-27 in the afternoon from Viento to Rufus. It’s likely that Stevenson will max out at 20-23 on Monday.
Tuesday currently looks light in the morning with 13-16 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
To be emotionally healthy human beings, there are a couple of big tasks (among others) that we need to learn. The first is to know and understand our emotional states and be able to name them. The second is to be able to interact with those emotional states in a way that they don’t overwhelm us. In technical terms, emotional regulation.
It’s best if we learn these skills when we are wee little ones. This happens when caregivers reflect a child’s emotional state back, preferably with precise emotional words, rather than “upset” or “happy”. For example, a caregiver might say to a crying child who’s spilled milk, “You’re sad that you dropped your glass and you’re worried that I’ll be mad at you for making a mess…” In this case, the emotions are validated, the child is allowed to experience them, and the caregiver helps the child regulate them.
A different caregiver response might be, “Go sit in the corner until you can stop crying.” In rare cases, this might result in true emotional regulation. More likely it will result in the child learning to quash emotional responses. The child might even learn that having emotions is bad, and that leads to all sorts of trouble.
As adults, we retain our childhood responses to emotions. Rather than letting emotions play out, we squish them into little boxes. We tell them to go away. We numb ourselves from unpleasant sensations that lead to tears. We put ourselves into a virtual corner, and label ourselves as “bad” until we emerge, quiet and emotion-free. We do this by isolating, exercising, eating, drinking, smoking, etc.
I have a little news for you: you’re grown up now. You don’t have to hide in a virtual corner when your emotions show up. You can befriend them. Although they may be painful, they’re fascinating and ultimately fleeting. Much like friends, emotions have a lot to offer if you let yourself, and them, out of the corner. I’m not sure if “awesome” is an emotion, but have an awesome day anyway.

We’re back to mostly blue sky, and we’ll stay that way for a few days. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Hey, wait, that exactly the forecast for Sunday and Monday too. Easy. Done!
