Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Warm and sunny weather is on tap for Saturday on Mt. Hood. Next storm system: Sunday afternoon into Monday with about a foot of new snow in the forecast. So, for Saturday, it’ll just be warm and sunny on the slopes – temps were already 40 degrees up high before sunrise. Wax warm! The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ in the morning and 9000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind: NW 10-15 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 25-30 overnight.

Sunday starts sunny, adds high clouds late morning, and turns stormy mid-afternoon. The freezing/snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 1000′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast in the afternoon, for a couple inches of new. Another 1.0” WE is forecast overnight, for 9-11” of increasingly dry, but wind-affected snow. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, SW 25-30 late morning, W 60 (bye-bye lifts?) in the afternoon, and NW 55 fading to NW 40-45 overnight.

Monday looks windy with orographic snowfall during the day and partly cloudy with scattered flurries in the afternoon. The sky clears overnight. Snow level 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight. Up to 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” of powder. Another 0.1” WE is forecast overnight, for another inch of new. Wind: NW 40-45 early, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 30-35 overnight.

Wind decreases during the day on Tuesday, but the freezing level stays low; expect 1000-1500′ during the day rising to 8000′ overnight. Wind: NW 30 in the morning, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. No precip. Wednesday looks sunny and warmer with 5000′ temps rising to 9C or the upper 40’sF. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue, but the timing and intensity keeps shifting around. That’s what we get when we’re relying on frontal passage for some of the wind strength. And oh boy do we have a frontal passage on Sunday. First, Saturday. Westerlies start at 13-16 all through the Gorge. Afternoon wind picks up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 10-13 east to Arlington. River flow is 113kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is (yay!) 64F.

Sunday starts with 10-14 all through the Gorge. A very strong cold front – it’ll take the snow level from 9000′ to 1000′ or so – blasts into the Gorge in the afternoon. Expect very gusty 30-40 from Stevenson to Boardman before the rain hits mid-afternoon. High temp: 59F. Monday sees very strong offshore high pressure rebuild (1040mb). Wind is likely to exceed model predictions. 10-13 in the west in the morning with 24-27 from The Dalles to Boardman. Afternoon: 13-16 in the west and 27-32+ from Rowena to Arlington.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky turns totally sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts out sunny and turns rainy mid to late afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light westerlies early. Nuking later. 14% chance of rainbows. Monday looks sprinkly in the morning and partly cloudy later. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 94% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

SHORT NOTICE: work party on GP in Post Canyon today (Saturday, 3/27). Bring rakes, shovels, buckets, etc., and also bring ear protection as they will be using vibraplates to pack the tread. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer.
