Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The weekend is starting off mostly clear, and sunshine will stick around through Sunday. Snow conditions are mostly granular of some sort – grooming report is that it’s less bulletproof than yesterday, but still quite firm. Some granular on top of the solid base. Our next chance of snow isn’t until the middle of next week, so make the most of what we’ve got! Today’s Ski To Defeat ALS at Meadows; you can donate and help families dealing with this sucky illness. Meadows Nordic has a Strava race happening.

So. Partly cloudy to start. Sunny later. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. No precip. The wind forecast is a bit tricky – it’s northerly. Call it 20-30 prior to dawn fading during the day to N 10-20. Same tonight.

Sunday will be sunny all day and high overcast after midnight. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. That should be warm enough for corn snow. Wind: N 10+ early, W 5 in the afternoon, and N 20+ overnight.

Monday looks high overcast with increasingly thick clouds. Don’t expect them to drop any precip; they’ll just hang out and block the sun. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. Wind: N 20+ in the morning, NNW 25-35 in the afternoon, and NW 30-40 after midnight. Tuesday looks cloudy. Snow arrives Wednesday morning, but models are only calling for a couple of inches. The weather turns much wetter next weekend, but temps aren’t yet clear. Have an excellent sunny weekend on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re looking for wind, you’re heading to the coast for the weekend or you’re waiting until Monday for the Gorge. Saturday starts with light and variable wind with 15-18 at Viento. Viento may stay in the double digits today. Other than that, all you’ll find is W 7-10 between Stevenson and Mosier with light/variable wind to the east. River flow is 154kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 56F. Sunday starts with W 7-10 from Stevenson to Rowena. Afternoon: 7-10 from Stevenson to Hood River with light/variable wind out east. High temp: 56F. Monday: 7-10, again, to start. By late morning, westerlies build to 24-27 from Stevenson to the Dalles. Rufus joins in the afternoon. Arlington only rises to the teens. High temp: 57F.

Bonus Coast Forecast (north/central/south, waves; wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: 10-15/15-20/25-30, NW swell 7′ at 9 seconds. Sunday: LTNW/10-15/30-35, W 6′ @ 15. Monday: 10-15/15-20/25-30, W 5′ @ 13.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky his morning gives way to clear sky this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid to upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be sunny all day. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and mid-upper 50’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Monday will be partly high overcast and then high overcast. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

Be cautious about your trail choices right now – some are too wet to ride. If you damage the trails, people have to spend time fixing them rather than building new trails for you to ride. If you did ride the trails, the best thing you can do is 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards or 2) show up for every single trail work party that happens this spring.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm. The Cold Lap mixed surface ride is at Dirty Fingers at 2pm on Sundays. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site The John Craig memorial ski race and tour is March 19th in Sisters on McKenzie Pass. Teacup has the “Glides of Spring” skate race on 3/19. Meadows Nordic has a Strava skate race happening between March 4th and, oh, sometime a few weeks from then.
