Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you like easterlies, you’re very much going to like the next week or so. Inland high pressure builds over the weekend, increasing the strength of the offshore gradients. Peak wind day will likely be Sunday. Do keep in mind that morning temps will be in the low 40’s, so you’ll want to dress warmly. River temp is 60 degrees; we still have a grand temp total of 100+.

Saturday starts off with zero gradient and light and variable wind. By midday, we should see the easterlies pick up to 20-25 from Rooster Rock to Stevenson with 5-10 in other locations. The easterlies look stronger and more widespread on Sunday. One problematic piece is that the east wind appears to rise above Cascade Crest level, meaning winds at Columbia level could be significantly less than model predictions.

So, for Sunday, models like the idea of 30-35 from Rooster Rock to Viento. I wouldn’t be surprised, given the forecast of E 30 on Mt. Hood, if we only see 20-25 or 25-30 on the Columbia. That said, the easterlies will be widespread, and usually calm locations will also have east wind; expect E 10-15 by early afternoon from Swell eastward to Arlington.

Monday also brings strong cross-Cascade gradients. Upper level wind will back off, meaning we’re more likely to see 30-35 on the Columbia between Rooster and Viento. Afternoon easterlies back off to 10-15 near Cascade Locks and 15-20 near Rooster Rock. Easterlies look lighter for the rest of the week with a chance of light westerlies thrown in at various times and days and locations.

BONUS: Jones Saturday-Monday: nope. Sauvie’s Saturday-Monday: no. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 10-15/20-25/25-30, W swell 3′ at 10 seconds becoming NW 6′ at 9 seconds. Sunday: NE 10-15/NE10-15/NE5-10, NW 5′ @ 13. Monday: N5-10/5-10/LTN, W 4′ @ 14.

Gorge Weather Forecast

What you see is what you get for the next week: blue sky, sunshine, and east wind. For Saturday, the sun will be out. Temps will be near 40 early an d near 70 later. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate easterlies, even in Hood River. No rainbows. Monday morning brings a slight chance of frost, or more likely sub-freezing temps without frost due to low dewpoints, especially in upper-elevation areas protected from wind. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 60’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Ditto for most of next week.
