Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It seems we have entered Easterly Season. For Saturday, we’ll have east wind at 40ish near Rooster, 30ish near Stevenson, and 25ish near Viento until 1:38pm or so, after which the wind will start to drop. By 6pm, the wind should be down in the 10-15 range in the western Gorge. We may see some light easterlies midday in the rest of the Gorge, but the afternoon die-off should keep the wind lighter in the Hood River area than it was on Friday.

Sunday sees a week weather system pass by to the north. This will disrupt the easterlies for a day: we’ll start with calm wind (and possibly a Nothing cloud) and finish off the day with easterlies at 15-20 near Cascade Locks and nothing near Rooster Rock.

The regular old east wind setup returns on Monday. We’ll have easterlies at 40ish near Rooster until midday followed by easterlies at 20-25 in the afternoon and evening. Tuesday looks like E 25-30 and Wednesday currently looks like W 26-30.

Random Morning Thoughts

I read a deeply disconcerting op-ed in the New York Times yesterday. No, don’t worry, it’s not political. It was talking about the current fad of internal happiness is detrimental to our social lives. Instead of taking a nuanced view, the article disparaged the hunt for internal happiness and encouraged us to put our energy into creating stronger social connections.

Like many things, the path to happiness isn’t unipolar. Our contentment needs to come from within (by restructuring our minds) and without (by building social connections) and from somewhere in between (coping skills, living situation, etc.)

In a society of instant gratification (Amazon Immediately! Pills! Marijuana!), we want this process to happen quickly. It does not. Creating internal and external happiness takes time and effort. Fortunately, it doesn’t take a lot of time. Focusing our full attention on the following things will begin to reshape the mind: a few minutes of gratitude, a few minutes of meditation, smiling at strangers, small amounts of time spent in community, exercise, sunshine, sleep and fresh-baked cookies…

Well, I’m not sure if the last contributes to happiness (definitely if you share them), but all of the items above combined with solid measures of faith, hope and patience (no really – those three are important) will, over the years, create lasting contentment. So, check your need for quick gratification, trust in yourself and the process, and start doing the little things. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s not a lot of precip in the forecast, at least not until the end of the week, and models are bouncing around a lot on what will actually happen then. As of yesterday, it looked like we might get FEET of snow, and now it looks like the snow level will stay above 6000′. This is the trouble with extended forecasts (and the reason I often don’t bother), but let’s still keep an eye on the end of the week.

For Saturday, the mountain will be sunny. The snow level will be over 12,500′. Temps at 5000′ will be near 50 in the morning and 55 in the afternoon. Wind will be E 20 in the morning and W 15 in the afternoon. Sunday looks partly cloudy with the free air freezing level over 12,500′. Temps at 5000′ will be near 52 in the mornign and 45 in the afternoon. Wind will be W 5-10 early and NE 25 in the afternoon. Monday looks sunny with the free air freezing level over 12,500′. Temps will be near 38 early and 45 in the afternoon. Wind will be E 35 in the morning and NE 20 in the afternoon.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a clear and somewhat smoky morning, smoky enough that the Underwood air quality sensor is reading “unhealthy for sensitive groups” at 119. I dunno where all that smoke is coming from… somewhere to the east. Anyway, it’ll be a sunny day with temps in the upper 30’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks mostly clear. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Strong easterlies. No rainbows. One last thing: the forecast has changed, and the scary wet, cold, snowy weather previously in the forecast for the end of next week is no longer there.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt is perfect everywhere according to Strava ride titles. One thing to note is a controlled burn on Burdoin Mountain that may have some trails closed (Millenium comes to mind). There are also closed trails in upper Post Canyon due to impacts from the Eagle Creek Fire. There’s a work party on the Pine Mont trail system on Saturday.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out.

Today’s happiness task is “pick up a piece of litter”. I promise you this will make you feel happier, because I do it all the time. Other events today: a work party on the Pinemont trails (Kitchen Sink is included here) at 9am. Special Olympics Shred Day at Rite Aid from 10am-2pm, with donations benefitting Special Olympics. Sunday is the Pumpkin Run in North Bonneville. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow: 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. Today is Dan Gavere’s garage sale at 1704 Orchard Road. Tons of high-end gear and size 9 shoes.

Have an awesome day today!
