Saturday. Sun, lots of sun. And a heat wave next week!

DSC_5127
Although we don’t have a lot of snow in the forecast this week, we do have a lot of sunshine. Perhaps that’s a fair tradeoff, and perhaps not. I suspect the backcountry skiers and mountain climbers are quite happy with what’s coming. As for today, you can expect sunshine all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day today. Wind will be WSW 20 all day long. Meadows is making noise about opening Superbowl today for hiking (it was open yesterday), and so you’ll want to bring all your avy gear if you’re headed there. It’s well worth the hike. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off sunny and turns cloudy late in the afternoon. Precip starts up around 11pm, continuing through early Monday morning. The snow level Sunday will be 10,000′ early, dropping to 8000′ when the precip hits and 3500′ by Monday morning. Sadly, the precip, .3-.4” or so, will fall as rain, with just a trace of snow at the tail end. Wind on Sunday will be WSW 10 or less early, picking up to SW 15 in the afternoon and SW 20-25 overnight.

Monday brings on-and-off snow flurries and sunshine. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning and 2500′ in the evening. The mountain will receive .1-.2” water value during the day, for less than 2” of new snow. Also, it’s possible the clouds and precip will be limited to the lower elevations of the resorts, with upper elevations experiencing sunshine. If that happens, there will be just a trace of new snow. Wind on Monday will be WSW 25 early, becoming W 30 in the afternoon.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday look sunny, but here’s what’s really nuts: The 850mb model suggests 5000′ temps in the mid 60’s on Thursday. No, not valley temps. Mountain temps in the 60’s. Whoa!

Gorge Wind Forecast

I was down at the Event Site yesterday, and just as I was leaving, someone headed out on a foil board in about 5-8mph of wind. That looked fun. You won’t need a foil board today – we are starting off with west gradients of .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). You can expect westerlies at 12-15 from Viento to Arlington this morning, picking up to 16-19 by midday and 22-25 this afternoon from Stevenson to Arlington. Enjoy. River water temp is 47 degrees.

Sunday starts off light and variable and finishes up with west wind at 5-10 from Stevenson to Mosier. The westerlies probably won’t arrive until after 5pm. A frontal system moving in Sunday night exits the region on Monday morning. High pressure builds in behind, setting us up for quite a windy day on Monday.

You can expect Dawn Patrol at 23-27 from Rowena to Arlington on Monday morning. After noon, the wind should pick up to 28-32 from Mosier to Arlington. The western Gorge, from Stevenson to Hood River, will likely remain showery and partly cloudy, with up-and-down, gusty westerlies at 13-16, stronger at times. It’ll be worth driving a bit on Monday for steadier, friendlier wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

For those of you who have not heard, there was a sexual assault of a high school student on the Indian Creek Trail on Tuesday around 10am. The attacker is described as a white male in his late 30’s, with light brown hair, stubble, and a medium to slender build. He was wearing standard-issue Hood River clothing: cargo shorts and a blue athletic t-shirt. If you have any information, please call the sheriff’s tip line at 541-387-7077.

It makes me sick to my stomach to hear this. Part of small town life is having a sense of safety. Part of the joy of living here is the knowledge that our trails belong to us and are safe for us to use alone. Trails are places for people to relax, shed the cares of the day, and tune in with nature and the body. In addition to stealing so much from this young student, the attacker has assaulted the entire community.

If you would like to stand up in solidarity against this, please join us for a run/walk on the Indian Creek trail this evening, Friday, at 4:30pm at the north parking lot of Hood River Valley High School. Please spread the word. The more people the better – this is a show of strength in support of both the victim and our community.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful morning out there. Warm. Sunny. Just a few pink clouds in the sky. Expect sunshine all day with temps right around 50 early and in the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. Sunday looks sunny to start and cloudy in the evening. Rain starts up after 11pm, continuing through Monday morning. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind all day Sunday. No rainbows Saturday or Sunday. Monday looks partly cloudy with showers. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be partly cloudy with sprinkles, most likely, and then we’ll see temps climb into the upper 70’s, maybe even the low 80’s by Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

You will find epic dirt at Syncline, Post, Hospital and Whoopdee, the Gorge 400, Kitchen Sink, and probably at Sandy Ridge too. That is all I have to say on that matter. Road biking today will include moderate west wind early and slightly stronger west wind in the afternoon. Not really the best day to ride to Rowena Crest or The Dalles from Hood River, in other words. Sunday’s dirt looks epic too, and Sunday’s road biking will be awesome, given the all-day light wind. Monday looks way too windy for either Syncline dirt or road biking.

Upcoming Events

The Gorge Roubaix happens today and tomorrow out in The Dalles. This evening from 5pm-9pm, the Dirty Harlots mountain bike race women’s team has their season kickoff party and fundraiser at Kickstand Coffee. The HRATS have a Post Canyon work party at 9am on Sunday, meeting at Family Man, and Steve Dunn has a work party on the new downhill trail at Whoopdee at 9am on Sunday. Some tools will be available, but if you have trail tools, bring them. The weather should be perfect, and you’re going to poop your pants when you see how awesome the new section of the Kleeway is!

Also tomorrow: lots of free or by-donation yoga classes: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also free meditation at Flow at 11am tomorrow.

Have an awesome day today!
