Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Today started off with some flurries, but the sky has gone mostly clear above the hill. That’s how it will stay today. The free air freezing level will be less than 1000′ this morning and 1500′ this afternoon. West wind at 20mph or so this morning will back off to W 5-10 in the afternoon.

Sunday looks clear, sunny, and warmer on the hill. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning and 8000′ in the afternoon, climbing to 10,000′ after midnight. Wind on Sunday will be light and variable, up to 10mph out of the west.

Monday looks clear and warm on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ under sunny sky. The wind will be SE 15 in the morning and S 15 in the afternoon.

Tuesday morning may start off with just a few sprinkles, but even if that happens, the majority of the day should be dry but cloudy. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning and 10,000′ in the afternoon. The wind on Tuesday will be SW 10-15 all day long.

The next weather system arrives Wednesday morning, and currently looks much to warm to fall as snow. The Euro and the GFS are offering up differing precipitation amounts, but it definitely looks rainy through Thursday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind at 5-10 this morning fades to nothing by the afternoon and east 15-20 after 4pm. Sunday looks like E 40 near Rooster Rock all day with E 50 after midnight. Monday starts with E 50 and backs off to E 40 after 4pm.

Random Morning Thoughts

When a string of stressful events happens to us – endless snowfall, for example – our nervous systems can become overly vigilant. The expectation of stress, the readiness for action, can continue past the time that danger is past.

Difficult times almost always come to an end, but the difficult emotions associated with the stress can persist. It’s important to be aware of this so that we can take actions.

In the case of this ridiculous weather, we can set aside some time for self-soothing. We can tell ourselves, “The snow is done, spring is coming, the roads are clear,” all the while visualizing these things in technicolor in our minds. It’s important to keep our soothing mantras in the positive – our minds are more likely to absorb a statement that’s phrased as “X is” rather than “X is not”. In concrete terms, that translates to saying “The snow is done,” rather than “It won’t snow any more.”

You can, of course, generalize this technique to other stressors, letting your body know you are safe, that the world is improving, and that good times will return. Speaking of good times, I do believe I see some blue sky out there. It’s an awesome day. Go be awesome.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. Sounds like Dirty Fingers has given up – they’re taking the shop ride to Portland on Sunday this week so they can actually ride bikes.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today: Spanish-language community yoga at Flow at 7am. Looks like the Cold Lap has been moved to Portland at Sellwood Cycles tomorrow due to distressing conditions here in the Gorge.

Have an awesome day today!
