Meet Temira,
your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

Temira with a giant pumpkin at Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today's snow forecast visualization
“Rise and glide, snow squad! The mountain’s channeling spring vibes with bluebird skies and temps flirting with 40°F. Today’s menu features a mix of hardpack and transforming snow (not quite corn yet!), with a side of light winds and possible sunrise spectacle. Nordic enthusiasts – the skate skiing is pure magic! Looking ahead, we’re keeping it warm and mostly dry through mid-December, with a chance of rain crashing the party next weekend. But hey, that early-season snowpack is holding strong! ” – Claude’s Over-the-Top Forecast Summary

Hey skiers and snowboarders! Mt. Hood’s settling in to a spring-like weather pattern for the long haul, or at least the medium haul. Most of the models and ensemble members keep us dry until next weekend when a bit of rain moves through. More deets on the extended forecast down below. In the meantime, we’ll have sunshine, above-freezing temps, and relatively light wind on the slopes. Groomed runs continue to be spectacular – a mix of hardpack and transitioning snow. Skategroom at the Nordic areas is off the charts – if you don’t skate yet, now’s the time to take it up! (yes, I’m obsessed)

So, Saturday. It’s going to be a sunny one after a few morning high clouds. Maybe we’ll have a spectacular sunrise. The free air freezing level will be around 10,000′ all day, and temps will max out near 40F at 5000′. Wind will be NW 10-15 in the morning, W 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight. Snow conditions will be a mix of hardpack and partially transitioned snow. We haven’t made it to granular yet, so some of the warmer, sunny areas might end up a bit sticky in the afternoon. Sunday looks sunny and nearly calm with max temps in the mid 40s. Ditto on Monday, but it might be a little warmer. Ditto on Tuesday and Wednesday.

For the latter half of next week, there’s some model disagreement about incoming precipitation. There’s good-enough agreement on temps: too warm for snow. The GFS brings rain in starting Thursday, but the Euro and Graphcast hold off until the weekend. Models then keep temps rather warm through the 14th or 15th. Sure, that’s a long ways out to be forecasting – normally I don’t. However, there’s good agreement on temps, whatever they are, remaining above freezing for the two-week period. Fortunately there’s a substantial early season snowpack out there. Go test it out for yourself if you haven’t already. It sure is fun! See you on the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Yesterday’s wind way exceeded the forecast, and looking back, I think I understand why. Every miss is an opportunity to get it more correct going forward! Going forward from here, all we have is an extended stretch of east wind, probably a week of it. Today will be a bit on the light side, but after today… much stronger. So, Saturday’s max will be E 20 at Stevenson and Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 15ish at Home Valley and Viento. The wind should hold into the afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 79-132kcfs, river temp is 50.0F, and high temp forecast is 42F with sunshine in the windy zone and Nothing elsewhere.

Sunday looks much windier. Iwash starts the day with 40-45mph. Stevenson starts with 25-30mph and rises to 30-35mph mid-morning. Afternoon easterlies fade to 25mph at Stevenson and 35-40mph at Iwash. High temp: 40F with sun in the windy zones. Monday starts with 35 at Iwash and fades to 25 in the afternoon. Stevenson: 25mph fading to 20mph in the afternoon. High temp: 43F with the same weather as the previous couple of days. Repeat this forecast for a couple more days next week. Dress warmly, wear a PFD, and keep an eye on your buddies. Have fun out there!

Cycling Update

It’s wet and muddy out there. Please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Make Today Awesome!

Whether you’re shredding fresh powder on Mt. Hood, surfing swell on the Columbia, or just enjoying our stunning home… remember that every day here is a gift. Make the most of it.

Have an absolutely epic day out there!
