Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong westerlies stick around for the weekend which might make you want to take a rest day. Looks like Mother Nature has one built in on Monday, so make the most of what we’ve got! Saturday starts off with a deep marine layer that may or may not burn off in the city. Gradients start the day at 0.08 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc). After comparing multiple gradients repeatedly (Pasco, Walla Walla, and Hermiston), it appears that Pasco is consistently the lowest pressure reading. Just an interesting note.

Anyway, the day starts with 13-16 from Viento to Mosier with less than 10mph in /Stevenson. Eastern Gorge: variable to 10ish. By late morning, we should be seeing 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 17-20 at Doug’s and 10-13 east of Doug’s. Stevenson is a bit tricky, as the wind there depends on when the clouds burn off. Eventually, it should make it to 20-25. Afternoon wind rises to 24-27 from Hood River to Rufus with 20-23 at Arlington. There’s some indication the wind will drop between Viento and Swell, but that seems questionable given the deep marine layer. For now, call it 24-27. River flow readings are 164-201kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River and 86F for Biggs. Today is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest in Stevenson: winging and kiteboarding freestyle for folks 20 and under. Check it out!

Sunday starts off with another round of deep marine clouds over the west side. They may push as far east as Hood River. Dawn Patrol looks like 24-27 from the cloud line to Mosier. It may be too cloudy and gusty for Swell to start the day, but it might not! East of Mosier: 18-22 to start. Stevenson: cloudy and less than 10mph. By mid-morning, westerlies build to 25-29 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 to Rufus and 11-14 in the eastern Gorge and at Stevenson. Afternoon: 25-29 from Stevenson to Mosier, 27-31 from Rowena to Rufus, 23-26 at Arlington, and 20-23 at Threemile. Sunday is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout. All the downwind floating objects are welcome to race the 19 mile course!

Lesser gradients are forecast on Monday. That said, it’s possible that offshore high pressure could cause reality to outperform the models. For now, let’s call it 15-18 from Viento to Mosier for Dawn Patrol with 12-15 out east. By late morning, locations east of Hood River go calm. It’s possible that the Stevenson-Hood River stretch will hold on to 11-14 despite models predicting calm wind. Somewhat stronger westerlies are currently forecast for Tuesday despite temps rising into the 90’s. Enjoy your weekend!

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. The Race Across Oregon started Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks. There’s a bass fishing tournament Sunday in Stevenson. Saturday is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest freestyle in Stevenson. Sunday is the Blowout – all downwind objects welcome.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain may still have some blowdown. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: full of ticks and poison oak. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
