Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! We’re entering a nice long stretch of west wind – you can count on it from today through Tuesday. There’s some model disagreement about the placement of a ridge Wednesday and Thursday, so the forecast is unclear then, but the general picture beyond that suggests westerlies day after day.

Starting with today, Saturday, we have… completely calm wind to start! Get out there and ride a bike or do some yard work or spray some pesticides and fungicides! The wind returns late morning or early afternoon as desert heating outpaces west side heating. By early afternoon, we’ll have 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-13 from Lyle to Doug’s. Westerlies pick up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s mid afternoon (Swell will probably fall to 15-18 for a period thanks to the influence of a weak system sliding through). Late in the day, 22-25 is possible from Stevenson to Avery with 13-16 at Rufus. Swell: 19-22 for that late session; if things stabilize enough post-system passage, Swell too could have 22-25 for the Executive Session. River flow over the last 24 hours was 199-262kcfs (243-288 at Rufus), river temp is 59.72F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River.

Sunday: BIG! Long-lasting marine clouds on the west side allow desert heating to outpace the metro area. Gradients stack up along the Cascade Crest. Dawn Patrol starts with 25-28+ from Viento to Mosier. The wind quickly rises to 28-31 from Stevenson to Doug’s. There’s a low-key DW SUP foil race happening tomorrow morning from Viento to … somewhere. After those folks blast through, the wind rises to 29-32 from Stevenson to Threemile and eventually adds Boardman at 27-30. High temp: 78F for Hood River.

Catch the Monday morning Dawn Patrol (25-28 Viento to Mosier) for the strongest wind of the day. By mid-morning, the wind drops to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 14-17 at Rufus and 16-19 at Swell. That’s pretty much the picture all day, at least for now.

Extended: Models shoot a low at BC on Tuesday, which leads to marine clouds on the west side locally. In terms of wind, look to the eastern Gorge for upper 20s to low 30s. Wednesday and Thursday contain quite a bit of uncertainty. After that, we’re expecting cooler weather and consistent westerlies. Hopefully that’s enough wind for you. See you out there!
