Saturday. Snowpocalypse? Carmageddon? Icetastrophe?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Saturday is starting off overcast on Mt. Hood. And before I get into the forecast, I’d like to remind you that my birthday is tomorrow, and that I love birthday cards. They can arrive late, and they’re even better. PO Box 841, Hood River, Oregon 97031. Now, the forecast: Overcast sky this morning gives way to snow flurries around 10am. The snowfall will pick up in the evening, likely switching to a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and possibly rain by 11pm. The snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 6000′ around 11pm. We’ll see .3.4” water value (WV) between 10am and 4pm, for 3-4” of snow. We’ll see another .5-.7” of mixed precip between 4pm and 4am, for a few inches of cold, wet, snowy stuff. Wind today will be S 20 mid-morning, becoming SW 20 in the afternoon and evening. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Monday brings on and off snow flurries with slightly steadier snow in the evening. The snow level will be 1000′ or less all day, falling to the surface overnight. We’ll see up to an inch of snow during the day, followed by 1-3” of dry snow overnight. Wind on Monday will be SW 15-20 all day long.

Tuesday currently looks cloudy with flurries in the morning. Another system moves in during the evening. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning and 3500′ when the system hits. As of right now, it looks like it will bring moderate wind and half a foot of snow. It’s worth noting that cold air at the surface and strong east wind indicate that this will likely become another lowland snow event.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 55-60 all day Saturday, backing off to E 50 after sunset and picking back up after midnight. East wind at 55-60 Sunday morning, E 40 after 2pm, and E 15-20 after 7pm. The wind may or may not turn light westerly overnight, but will almost certainly be back to light east wind by Monday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I find myself deeply inspired these days by the way Buddhist teachers operate in the world. Rather than charging fixed prices for their teachings, they work on the dana system. This translates best as “generosity”; these teachers live on the donations of others, accepting whatever others can give. Christianity has a similar creed, the tithing system, and other ethical/moral codes work in parallel ways.

One of the lovely things about these systems is that they encourage people to feel good when they are generous. Just as I feel good providing a forecast, I am guessing that many of you feel good saying “thank you” by making a donation. By holding this understanding in awareness, you can take it out into the world and have a wider impact.

An important piece to keep in mind is that we often judge who is or is not worthy of our generosity. Yes, we have to prioritize, and almost none of us have enough to be generous towards everyone. That said, we can hold in our hearts the intent to be generous, and to believe that everyone deserves to receive generosity from others.

Why? Because giving warms our hearts and makes us more loving people. And because receiving can also open hearts and create more loving people. Simply holding the intention to give without judgment and receive without guilt will bring more peace, joy, equanimity, and interconnection into our lives. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Overcast sky this morning gives way to snow around 10:30. Temps will be in the teens early and the low 20’s later. 2-3” snow by 7pm, another 5-6” overnight. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks snowy with freezing rain after 4pm or so. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Monday is a real crapshoot. We’ll start off sub-freezing and end sub-freezing, but it’s unclear what will happen during the day. How about a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, with a chance of rain. Light east wind. 15% chance of rainbows. Next high-impacct storm looks like Tuesday evening.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, there is no biking, not unless you have a trainer bike or a gym membership. It has been pointed out to me that fat biking is available, so there’s that. There is snow kiting potential, backcountry skiing potential in the Gorge, and XC skiing available at the Twin Tunnels.

Upcoming Events

Well let’s see… the Seahawks are playing this afternoon, and other than that, I’m not sure what events are on or off due to anticipated snow. I know there’s a mad rush happening at the grocery stores!

Have an awesome day today!
