Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood picked up more snow than the forecast last night, always a good thing. Light snow will continue just past daybreak with clear sky for the rest of the day. The mountain will see .1-.2” water value (WV) in the morning, for 1-2” of additional snow. The snow level will be 0′. Wind will be NW 15 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and SW 15 after midnight.

Sunday’s forecast is tricky, because it depends on the path of an incoming low pressure system. The farther north that system goes, the more likely it is the mountain will see rain. The farther south, the more likely it is that snow will fall. So, the mountain will see light snow starting around 7am, with 1-2” before sunset. Heavier precip moves in mid-afternoon. That’s the uncertain precip, as the snow level could be anywhere between 3000′ and 8000′. Looks like about .5” WV overnight. If it’s snow, it’ll be dense, perhaps 3-4”. Wind also depends on the storm track, but should be SW 15-30 or so.

Monday sees an inch or so of snow in the morning followed by clear sky. The snow level will be 0-1000′ or so. Wind will be W 30 in the morning, NW 25 in the afternoon, and NW 15 overnight. The long-range forecast contains a lot of uncertainty; the GFS has us mostly dry and cold, and the Euro has us much wetter and warmer. Guess we’ll be waiting to see what happens, eh?

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things that’s so insidious about depression is that it contains a positive feedback loop. The more depressed one is, the less one does. The less one does, and the more isolated one becomes, the more depressed one becomes. The solution for this is to do something. Anything. Get up and walk. Call a friend. Use the crisis line for some anonymous social support.

Winter weather can make this even worse. When our mobility is limited by snow and ice, we’re more likely to feel lonely, helpless and trapped. When that happens, it’s time to get creative. Grab a snow shovel and do the neighbor’s walk, taking advantage of both the exercise and the good feelings that come with being generous and kind. Scrape some windshields. Bake cookies for the elderly individual down the street. Just do something, and your mood will change for the better, even if only briefly. That will give your nervous system a chance to rest and refuel. Give it a shot. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

for Saturday, we’ll have east wind near Rooster Rock at 30-35 in themorning and 45-50 in the afternoon and overnight. Sunday starts with easterlies at 55mph. Around midnight, the wind will back off to E 25-30, going calm by dawn. Monday looks like W 10-13 after 9am, but that could change depending on the track of the incoming low pressure system.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have light snowfall this morning with reports of 2” to 6” in the Hood River area. I’m guessing other locations have similar amounts of snow. Temps today will stay in the low to mid 30’s all day. Snow will end by about 9am. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks cloudy with light snow after 9am. Snowfall increases after noon. We’ll see 2-4” in Hood River. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and upper 20’s in the afternoon. Monday starts off with continued light snow or freezing rain (depends on the track of the storm system). Temps also depend on storm track. Long-range forecasts are all over the place ranging from dry and cold to warm and wet.
