Saturday. Shredding today. Freezing next week.

It’s not snowing on Mt. Hood today. On the contrary, it’s sunny, and it’s going to be warm later. Both Timberline and Meadows have one lift open: Bruno, 9am-4pm at T-Line and Buttercup, 3pm-7pm at Meadows. Meadows also has a pray for snow party at the resort tonight with the band Hit Machine 8pm-11pm. Too…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

In snow forecast news, today looks sunny and beautiful with increasing temps as the day goes on. Expect the free air freezing level (FAF) to top out around 10,000′ today, with temps at 5000′ in the low 40’s by this afternoon. Light and variable wind.

Tomorrow also looks sunny and beautiful on the mountain. Meadows is not scheduling a lift tomorrow. T-line hasn’t confirmed anything yet, as best I can tell from their conditions page. Anyway, the free air freezing level will be 11,000′, and temps at 5000′ will be in the low 40’s. Light SW wind early becomes W 10 in the afternoon.

See below for details.

Monday starts out sunny and quickly becomes cloudy. Light precip may start as early as 10am, with the bulk of the precip starting around 4pm and ending by midnight. The snow level will be 9000′ early, 6000′ midday, 4000′ when the heavy precip hits, and at 500′ or less by 10pm. We’ll see .4-.6” water value (WV), for 4-6” of new snow at 5000′. Wind will be WSW 20-30 in the morning, becoming W 30 in the afternoon and holding overnight.

Tuesday sees the snow level at 500′ or less, with light flurries for an inch or two of accumulation. No more precip for the rest of the week (yet), but it looks freakin’ cold down at sea level: temps in the 20’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It was nuking wind, 46-56, when I drove back from Portland last night. It’s still blowing in the 40-50 range, and will back off just a bit this afternoon. For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station. Tomorrow starts off with E 30-40 at Rooster and backs off to E 25-30. Monday starts with light and variable winds and switches to W 22-25, and that might just save us from an early-season Gorge weather disaster. Tuesday brings light and variable wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve taken the last few mornings to catch up on my sleep deficit. I wrote that sentence, and that’s as far as I got with today’s random morning thoughts for about 15 minutes! What, really, is there to say about sleeping in? It’s an indulgence. It’s something nice we do for ourselves once in a while, despite the fact that recent research shows that sleeping in may be bad for you.

Even so, I’m in favor of all of us indulging ourselves by sleeping in occasionally. I’m also in favor of occasional indulgences of various types. Moderation, in other words.

When we constantly deny ourselves the things that bring us great pleasure – chocolate, a glass of wine, a walk in the woods, sleeping in – we are, on some level, beating ourselves up. We’re saying, “You don’t deserve these nice things.” Or maybe we’re saying, “I don’t think you can control yourself, and you’re bad, so no (insert desired thing) for you.”

As a side note, it is, of course, important to understand why we desire these indulgences. If we want a glass of wine to make our emotional pain go away, for example, there may be a healthier, longer-lasting approach. Perhaps a hike on a sunny trail with a friend?

Anyway, be kind to yourself. Do nice things for yourself. Understand why you do those things. When you are kind to you and give yourself little indulgence presents, your day will be more awesome. Have an awesome day in the sun today!

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re lucking out this morning – there was only a slight Nothing, and it’s already gone, leaving us with sunny weather and blue sky. Expect temps in the low 30’s early and, if NOAA’s right, the mid 40’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks the same – slight nothing early. Temps in the upper 20’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind, no rainbows.

Monday looks tricky: we start off sunny. Clouds move in midday. Precip starts around 4pm. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early, low 40’s in the afternoon, and then will crash as the evening progresses. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see rain from this system, but the snow level will be down around 500′ by late Monday night, leaving us with the potential for icy roads and an inch or two of snow above 500′ Colder air moves in Tuesday with flurries likely, and temps look like they’ll stay in the 20’s all day Wednesday. Brrr!

This will be your first chance for frozen Gorge waterfalls this season!

No rainbows for the next 72 hours.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s a tough call this morning. The temp dipped below freezing last night, freezing the muddy trails. This will lead to freeze-thaw conditions today, with slippery mud. It’s not the mud that’s the problem – it’s the damage that will occur if you ride these trails. Please stay off trails that are exposed to the sun this morning. Maybe they’ll be okay this afternoon. Maybe not. In an interesting twist, I went for a jog in Post yesterday, and it wasn’t all that muddy. So, if you stay under the canopy, Post might be okay. Other good options: Kitchen Sink, Nestor Peak, Gorge 400.

Upcoming Events

There are work parties scheduled for both Falls Creek (8am, Saturday and Sunday at Backwoods Brewing) and Cooks Meadow (9am Saturday at Little John Snopark) today. In an interesting twist, it will likely be much warmer at those work parties (at least at Cooks Meadow), than it will be down at river level.

On Sunday, there’s yoga at 9am at Yoga Samadhi, rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, and free yoga at 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. There’s also ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5:30.

Have an awesome day today!
