Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday, and if you make it through today, you’ll find windier times. A couple of notes: we have an E coli problem around the Hood River sandbar and the Event Site. We also have the go-ahead for kite launching at the poopy-water Event Site. River flow in the Columbia is the highest it’s been for many years, so please be careful out there – the current is quite strong.

So, for Saturday, we start with minimal gradients and very light west flow (it’s glassy in Hood River at 7am). Not much happens this morning. Early in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 8-11 in the western Gorge and 12-15 from Lyle to Arlington. Afternoon: light in the western Gorge (with rain after 5pm) and gusty 20-23 from Avery to Threemile. It’s worth mentioning that abundant humidity and sunbreaks could combine to trigger a few thunderstorms, or at least showers and instability. This will, of course, result in low-quality wind that’s unresponsive to forecaster predictions. River flow is 359-414kcfs which is really a no-go for the Rufus stretch. River temp is 56F, and high temp forecast is 72F.

A low pressure system sweeps inland on Sunday morning, and high pressure builds offshore behind it. That’s good news for the wind, but we also have a downpour predicted for the eastern Gorge until early afternoon. So, wait. Expect the day to start with no sign of strong westerlies. Early wind will be 5-10mph west of The Dalles and light/variable to the east. Torrential rain is predicted east of The Dalles until late morning or early afternoon. While that’s happening, there won’t be any wind out east, but you will find gusty 17-20 from Viento to The Dalles. The wind jumps to 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus once the rain stops in the western Gorge. Late afternoon brings gusty 27-31 from Viento to Arlington and gusty 18-22 at Stevenson. High temp: 64F.

Offshore high pressure lingers on Monday, and a trough of lower pressure settles over Idaho and Montana and, well, all over the place to the east of the Cascades. Dawn Patrol looks like 10-13 in the western Gorge and 22-25 east of The Dalles. Don’t worry – it’ll get stronger! The western Gorge will be cloudy and gusty. Westerlies probably won’t climb above (very gusty) 14-17 on Monday. Hold out for 27-31 midday from Avery to Threemile. Wait a little longer for 29-33. If you are seeking a big wave day in the far eastern Gorge, you’ll find 18-22 near Boardman late morning with 27-31 in the afternoon. Remember the river flow: you’re almost certainly going to have to drive past Rufus and The Wall due to the current. High temp: 60F. Tuesday also looks windy. The forecast as of right now is 26-30.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Today’s events: at 9am, there’s a 30-60 minute kid-friendly, garden-related activity at the Dalles Imagination Garden. The Hood River Farmers Market is 9-12, as is the one in The Dalles. Stevenson’s runs 10-2. Every second Saturday, there’s a cleanup in The Dalles. Today is the Strawberry Fields Forever ultramarathon in North Bonneville. Jazz in the Park takes place at Jackson Park tonight from 7-9pm. Bring an umbrella.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
