Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather continues again today, and as usual, the dynamics contribute to complexity in the forecast. Working in our favor today is stronger Pacific high pressure – it’s 1030mb this morning. Add inland gradients of .06 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc), and you have all the signs pointing eastward. The western Gorge will be cloudy all day with scattered showers. Another sign you should head east!

Morning westerlies will be 10-15 all through the Gorge. The western Gorge holds at gusty 5-15 all day. By midday, westerlies build to 24-28 from Avery to Boardman. Lyle to Doug’s are questionable; with clouds and sprinkles forecast for The Dalles at times, they’re likely to be gusty and lighter. Looking at the afternoon, we see another weak system approaching. Models suggest the offshore high pressure and desert sunshine will keep the wind going, but it’ll be less reliable; expect gusty 27-31 from Avery to Threemile. High temp Hood River: 65. Arlington: 70F.

A low wanders into the BC offshore waters on Sunday morning and moves inland in the late afternoon or evening. In response, Gorge wind goes light westerly or even calm for the first half of the day. Around 1pm or so, gusty westerlies return. You’ll find gusty, up-and-down 18-23 from Stevenson to Rufus. East of there: light westerlies. High temp Hood River: 64F.

Low pressure settles in over the Pacific Northwest on Monday for a cool, mostly cloudy, relatively calm day. It’s likely the westerlies will be 0-10 in the morning. They’ll build to gusty, unreliable 11-14 from Hood River to The Dalles in the afternoon. Stevenson: 5-10. East of The Dalles: light and variable.

Generally speaking, next week’s weather will be driven by offshore low pressure and inland troughing. That’s not ideal. It does mean we’ll see seasonable temps along with the lighter westerlies. Enjoy the wind today!
