Saturday. Rain & snow for the Hood. Incoming pineapples next week.

DSC_0329_HDR
It is most definitely not snowing on Mt. Hood this morning. It’s doing the opposite, if you consider the opposite of snow to be rain. If you’re a skier or snowboarder, that’s probably your perspective. If you’re a snowbird, your perspective may be that the opposite of snow is rain. See, that’s just one small example of how are worlds are subjective. Anyway… Expect sprinkles this morning, sunbreaks midday, and increasing precipitation after 4pm. The snow level will be 6500′ this morning, 9000′ tonight, falling to 4000′ by Sunday morning, by which time the precip will be all gone. Bye-bye precip. We’ll see no real accumulation during the day. That’s followed by .7-1.0” water value (WV) tonight, most of which will fall as rain, with the slight possibility of 1-2” of wet snow at the end of the system. Slight = unlikely. Wind today will be SW20 for much of the day, rising to SW 30-40 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off partly cloudy with a few flurries. It’s possible we’ll see a few hours of sunshine before the next round of precip moves in around 4pm. The snow level will be 4000′ early, dropping to 1500-2000′ after midnight. We’ll see .1-.2” WV during the day, for less than 2” of new snow. We’ll see another .5-1.0” overnight, for 5-10” of new snow. Sorry about the big spread – it’s coming out of the south, and that makes it a little tricky to predict the amount. Wind on Sunday will be SW 30 early, dropping to SW 15 by the afternoon, and turning to E 15-20 overnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light westerlies at some locations this morning and light and variable conditions at other locations. You can expect the wind to switch to E 20-25 midday and turn back to light and variable conditions after 7pm. Sunday brings W 13-16 through the whole Gorge early, backing off a little midday and picking up to W 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. Expect west wind at 10-13 on Monday morning, picking up to 23-26 through the whole Gorge on Monday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m in the middle of this weekend training, and at this training, we are working with the child state. Some people have easy access to this state, and some don’t. You know you’re in it if you have child-like openness, directness of speech, a young way of feeling and presenting, and, for me, generally, the ability to switch quickly from one pure emotion to another. There are other things that can go along with this state – a feeling of awe and wonder, for example, and openness to new experience.

I was thinking about the child state this morning and wondering if it’s an indicator of our brains being in a state of neuroplasticity, a state where our neurons are open to pattern change. In therapy, we find that we can make long-lasting impacts in a person’s experience of the world when they are in this state. Given those conjectures, it makes sense to cultivate that state when we are doing things we love and when we’re around people we love, because it can change our mind in a positive way.

See if you can access that state, just for fun. I find if I make myself little (sit on the floor, maybe), make the face of a curious child, and look up at the world, giving me a child’s perspective, it’s pretty easy to access. Now you try it. Be a child again for a few minutes. Sure, it might feel silly to try, but it will open up your experience and perspective, just a little bit. And that, I think we can agree, is a good thing. Play with it. Have fun. You still have all that wonder and joy and openness inside you. You just have to learn how to tap into it so it can change your world for the better. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I haven’t got a clue what’s happening in Post. Mud, I would suspect, as Mark Deresta hasn’t texted to let me know it’s perfect. Syncline looks good today: not too muddy, not too rainy, not too windy, and packed with wildflowers (and maybe ticks). Road biking looks good, with light wind all day.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, there’s the Echo Red 2 Red mountain bike race and a Hoka One shoe demo in Post Canyon from 8am to 10am combined with a trail run. Coming up on Sunday, it’s community yoga day: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga, pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm, and ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5pm.

Have an awesome day today!
