Saturday: rain, glorious rain, very wet rain…

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Addition to the list: Rock Creek in Mosier is now closed to anyone who is not a resident of zip code 97040. This is due to visitors not practicing social distancing at the beach. All Oregon (Viento, Rowena) and Washington (Doug’s, Hatchery) State Parks are closed at this time. The Hood River Marina and Event Site are closed. The Army Corps has closed all parks (The Wall, Rufus, Roosevelt). Swell City is closed. Please do not come here to do wind sports. Do them close to home. If you’re local and getting on the water somehow, follow Maui rules: rig quickly, get in the water, and leave as soon as you are done. No hanging out. Maintain at least six feet space on land and on the water. Do not place yourself directly upwind or downwind of anyone. Don’t go harder than 50%, and keep your focus at 100%. This is not the time to get injured.

A progressive weather pattern sets us up for gusty westerlies of various sorts for the better part of the next week or so For Saturday, the morning starts light and variable. After a cold front moves through early afternoon, the western Gorge picks up to 8-11 or so. Rowena to Arlington rise to gusty 24-28. River flow is 195kcfs and temp is 52 degrees.

Sunday starts with very light westerlies. The wind goes calm midday. After 2pm or so, light westerlies return, slowly building to 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Monday starts with light westerlies as we wait for another weather system to move through. Afternoon wind: 10-13 in the west and very gusty 20-26 from Avery to Arlington.

Jones, Sauvie’s, and Coast forecast are on break to discourage travel.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

On and off drizzle and wind fill the forecast for most of the next week for the mountains. Saturday’s going to be rainy. The snow level will be 8000′ int eh morning, 7000′ int eh afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. About 0.7” rain falls during the day followed by a trace overnight. Wind: SW 20-30 early, SW 30-40 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and W 15 overnight.

Sunday looks clear for much of the day. High clouds and some light drizzle moves in overnight. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. Up to 0.2” rain falls overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon. That builds to SW 35-50 after midnight. Monday looks drizzly with periods of sunshine. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. About 0.3” rain falls during the day – there may even be some wet snowflakes mixed in. A trace falls overnight. Wind: SW 35-50 early, W 35 in the afternoon, and SW 20-25 overnight. Similar weather continues for the rest of next week, assuming the forecast holds.
