Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Epic powder skiing continues. Trying to access it? Be cautious: I-84 and SR-14 are closed, and all the truck traffic and recreation traffic is on 26/35. heavy snow continues for days and days, so today is not the only day. Expect dumping snow for the next 24 hours. The snow level will be 0′ all day with the effective snow level (temp-wise) rising to 3000′ this afternoon and falling to 1500′ this evening. Those snow levels are merely for the purpose of determining snow quality. The snow level remains at the surface in most locations. Precipitation today: 1.0” water equivalent (WE), for 11-14” of new. Overnight: 1.3” WE, for 14-17” of new. Wind: WSW 20-30 this morning, W 45 midday, WNW 35 this afternoon, And W 25 overnight. Bring a shovel to dig yourself out of the parking lot.

Moderate snowfall continues on Sunday, but there may be a period of mixed precip overnight. The effective snow level will be 1000-1500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. About 0.4” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” of increasingly dense snow. About 0.7” WE is forecast overnight. It’s likely some of that will fall as freezing rain, making a giant mess of the lifts. Wind: W 25 early, WSW 20-40 in the afternoon, and W 40 overnight.

The snow level drops during the day on Monday and the wind goes W/NW, for giant orographically-enhanced snowfall totals. The effective snow level will be 5500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 1500-2000′ overnight. 1.2” WE is forecast during the day. That may start as mixed precip or freezing rain, but will turn to snow. Call it 7-10”. Another 1.2” WE is forecast Monday evening, for 12-15” of higher quality snow. Wind: Storm skiing, for sure. W 40-45 all day becoming NW 45-50 overnight. Heavy snow and storm skiing continues on Tuesday! Practice deep snow safety. Carry avy gear. Keep your riding buddy in sight. Rescue others in need of help. Have fun!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies continue at 45-55 this morning near Rooster before backing off to 30-35 this afternoon. Stevenson: 20-30 all day. Viento: 15-20. River flow: who cares. River temp: dropping. Now 37 degrees. Saturday starts with 35-45 at Rooster and 25-30 at Stevenson. The wind holds all day. Monday starts with E 35-45 at Rooster and 25-30 at Stevenson. Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
