Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Despite today being day 1 of Spring 2021, snow is in the forecast for most of the next five days. Thank you, La Nina. Saturday brings steady snowfall all day long and a decrease in snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ all day and will fall to about 1500′ overnight. 0.4”-0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for the day, for 4-5” new snow. 0.1-0.2” is predicted overnight. That’s 1-2” more. Wind: WSW 20-35 in the morning, WNW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 30-40 overnight.

Light snowfall continues on Sunday with sunbreaks mixed in for the morning. Snowfall picks up again overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and 2500′ from mid-afternoon on. Just a trace of snow is forecast during the day… maybe 1” of new. Overnight, 0.7” WE is forecast, for 6-8” of relatively dry snow. Wind: NW 30-40 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 45 overnight.

Monday starts windy and snowy and adds sunbreaks in the afternoon with clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ most of the day and 2000′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast for the day, for an inch of new snow. A trace is all that’s forecast overnight. Wind: W 45 in the morning, WNW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Tuesday starts with sunshine and probably ends with high clouds. Another system moves in from the NW on Wednesday bringing up to a foot of new snow. Sounds like a darn fine five days coming up. Enjoy the turns!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Trailbuilder request: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. So, skip GP and ride the brown pow that’s all over the rest of the trails. Excellent dirt is to be found in the lower sections of Post, on Syncline, at Nestor, on Hospital Hill, and probably at Columbia Hills (where there will be lots of Grass Widows and other early flowers). Remember: it’s still winter, and freeze-thaw is possible. If you hit freeze-thaw mud, please turn around so you don’t do permanent trail damage. Whoopdee is especially susceptible to freeze-thaw. Please avoid it until nights warm above freezing.
