Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The weather through the middle of next week has one thing in common each day: unseasonable warmth on the slopes. Hmmm. That’s not quite what we want in January! Thank an atmospheric river with tropical roots and SSW flow for that. Fortunately, most of the rain will fall Friday night into Saturday. It’ll still be wet Saturday daytime, Saturday night, and prior to dawn on Sunday, but after that, we have at least a couple days of dry, warm weather.

For Friday night, the snow level will rise to 8500-9000′. Over an inch of rain is in the cards. Worth mentioning: models often under-predict rain with atmospheric rivers, and this thing visiting us is a solid atmospheric river. Let’s call it 2” just to be safe. Wind: SW 30-45 overnight. Saturday will be rainy, breezy, and relatively warm. Temps max out in the low 40’s at 5000′. The snow level will be 8500′ during the day and 7000′ overnight. About 0.8” rain is forecast during the day followed by 0.7” overnight. Wind: SW 25-40 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-25 overnight. Models suggest a total of 2.9” to 3.5” total rainfall between Friday night and Sunday morning.

Light rain early on Sunday gives way to a period of partly cloudy sky followed by increasing clouds and then partly cloudy sky again overnight. Just a trace of rain is forecast before the transition to dry, warm, somewhat cloudy weather. The free air freezing level will be 7000′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 9500′ overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s at 5000′ in the morning and mid 40’s in the afternoon. Wind: WSW 20-25 in the morning turns to SW 10-20 midday and becomes more southerly at 10-20 from early afternoon on through the night.

Monday looks warm – 50F or so – partly cloudy, and moderately breezy. SW wind at 20-30 is forecast all day. Similar weather is forecast Tuesday. Sometime late Wednesday, cooler weather arrives. At least a few inches of snow is in the forecast Wednesday into Thursday. Let’s all vote for a couple feet of snow (it’s not going to happen, but we can still wish for it) to refresh what will be a very icy snowpack once sub-freezing temps return. In the meantime, grab a hefty bag to put over your raingear, wax warm, and hit the uncrowded slopes. There’s no bad weather – just bad clothing. See ya up there!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies continue…. Models suggest there’s a chance of westerlies Thursday and Friday as NW flow returns to the Pacific Northwest. Fingers crossed! For Saturday, expect Stevenson to start at 25 and fall to 15-20. Iwash (Rooster) starts at 25-30 and falls to 10-15. Rainy. River flow on Friday was 79-119kcfs, river temp is 36.5F (brrr!) and high temp forecast near Stevenson is low to mid 40’s. Sunday starts with E 15 at Stevenson and rises to 15-20. Iwash starts light and variable and rises to E 15-20. High temp: somewhere in the 40’s near Stevenson. Rainy until noon or so. Colder in Hood River. Monday starts with E 25 at Stevenson and holds. Iwash: 30-35 all day. High temp: pushing 50 in the western Gorge with at least some sun. Dry. Cloudy and colder near Hood River.

Rain Saturday morning gives way to a few mostly dry hours and then more rain overnight. Temps will be in the mid-upper 30’s and will rise to the, um, upper 30’s? Sunday will be rainy in the morning then dry. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the low 40’s. Easterlies. 18% chance of rainbows. Monday will be dry with Nothing and high clouds. Temps start near 40 and rise to 50 according to NWS. I doubt that. Let’s say 40ish all day instead. Easterlies. No rainbows. Want it warm? Head to the Willy Valley. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
