Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday morning, and if you look out the window you will see high clouds. This is a good indicator that the wind will be gusty and unreliable. As a series of weather systems moves through Saturday and Sunday, the gustiness will continue, as will the possibility of the wind dying off to nothing-near-predictions. Rebuilding high pressure on Monday drives the wind speeds down, and offshore flow on Tuesday turns it around.

Saturday’s details: a low pressure trough moving inland today is aided and abetted by shortwaves moving through. In theory, we’ll have westerlies at 19-23 this morning between Viento and Mosier (less at Hood River) with 5-10 in the eastern Gorge. In the afternoon, models suggest gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles with a chance of 27-30 from Lyle to Avery. Rufus looks to max out at 18-22 today, and Roosevelt gets 5-10. While those are the model predictions, weather dynamics are likely to make the wind inconsistent – periods that match those speeds are likely, and so are periods where the wind takes a dive. River flow today is 137kcfs and temp is 69 degrees.

Looking at Sunday, we have a weak system moving in from the NW with a couple of embedded areas of higher energy in the morning and evening. This will keep areas west of Hood River (probably including Swell) cloudy and rainy for much of the day. We’ll also see gusty conditions on the river. Expect 10-13 in the west in the morning with 7-10 east of The Dalles. Afternoon westerlies build to gusty 10-13 in the western Gorge (more at Viento, despite the rain), and gusty 24-29 from Mosier to Arlington. We may see gusty 18-23 near Hood River if things line up just right.

Low and mid clouds are in the forecast Monday, another indicator for gusty wind. Building high pressure will also knock down the speeds. Model disagreement exists, but here’s what I think we’ll see: 13-16 from Mosier to Doug’s with 5-10 east of there. The western Gorge is a bit tricky, so let’s call it gusty, up-and-down 13-16. Tuesday’s forecast currently calls for E 15-20.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 17-20. Sunday: nope. Monday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Saturday: 11-14 late. Sunday: 5-8. Monday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 5/5-10/25-30+, NW swell 5′ at 7 seconds. Sunday: W5/W5/25-30+, NW 7′ @ 9. Monday: 15-20/15-20/25-30+, NW 7′ @ 10.
