Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Uncertainty and changeability in the forecast models continues to plague this forecast. It’s fall. That’s to be expected! In our favor right now: offshore high pressure. Not in our favor: cool nights that keep the desert from reaching its summertime heat potential. That said, we should have moderate westerlies for the weekend and slightly stronger wind on Monday and Tuesday. Monday’s more of a “maybe” due to a weather system moving through; that’s definitely not an ideal setup.

Saturday starts with pressures of 29.95/29.93/29.87 for gradients of 0.02 and 0.06. Wind was nearly non-existent to start the day – call it light and variable. Not much happens this morning. Go take advantage of the perfect dirt on the trails. In the afternoon, thanks to the combo of offshore high pressure and inland “warmth” (slightly warmer than the metro area, but not much), we should see 13-16mph or a touch more from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow yesterday was 60-96kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 69F.

Sunday’s setup is similar, but a front approaching in the afternoon will nudge the wind slightly higher. Worth noting: if Saturday’s forecast exceeds the prediction (13-16), you can add a few mph to Sunday’s forecast. The day starts with 11-14 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday wind rises to 13-16 everywhere. Launches east of The Dalles drop off in the afternoon with one exception. Stevenson to Avery rises to 15-18mph or so. High temp: 69F under sunny sky with high clouds after 2pm.

Monday’s models give us sufficient gradients for wind. But… a weather system scheduled for the morning impacts both predictability and quality. Models suggest a dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier (that may skip Hood River) with 10-13 east to Arlington. Rain starts up by 8am or 9am and puts a damper (pun intended) on the wind. Afternoon westerlies drop to 12-15 in the west and rise to very gusty 23-27 from Avery to Arlington. It may be a short wind window between the time the rain stops and the time the sun sets. Drive pre-emptively. Models hint at low 20’s on Tuesday and easterlies in the mid 20’s on Wednesday. The rest of the week looks warm and sunny with moderate easterlies. Enjoy!

Cycling

Yesterday was brown pow. After last night’s rain, things are probably slick again. Choose your trails wisely – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
