Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Overcast sky and a bit of sprinkles is what’s happening this morning. Snow conditions are pretty soft – with clouds overnight, the snow (per report) did not snap hard. Expect a mix of granular and wet pack. Not much, if any, precip is forecast for the next several days. Models bring a slightly stronger weather system through on Wednesday, but they are not agreeing on the precip totals.
Let’s look at Saturday. It’ll be mostly to totally cloudy all day. A few sprinkles were falling prior to dawn, but they are not forecast to stick around. The snow level will be 6000′ this morning, 8000′ this afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. Just a trace of precip is planned. Wind: WSW 15 this morning, S 5-10 this afternoon, and SE 15 overnight.
Sunday may start with glimpses of blue sky, but high clouds will arrive during the day and stick around through the night. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day and 8000′ after midnight. Wind: SE 15 in the morning, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and W 5 overnight.
Instability may kick off some showers on Monday, but it’s rather hard to pinpoint where they will be. If they grace the slopes of Mt. Hood, they will be rain showers in the daytime and snow flurries overnight. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. Trace amounts of precip are probably all we’ll get. Wind: W 5 in the morning, W 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight.
Clear sky is forecast on Tuesday with the snow level maxing out at 6500′ in the afternoon and falling to 2000′ overnight. Some snow is possible but not guaranteed on Wednesday. Moving into the late part of next week, we see model uncertainty increase. Have a lovely weekend!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

High temp: 68F. Monday starts off calm or with very light west wind. Westerlies build to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles around noon with 10-13 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 22-25 from Hood River to Rufus. High temp: 62F.

Cycling
It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. BUT NOT AT POST CANYON. I saw bikes covered in trails (mud) coming out of there Tuesday. If you ride when it’s muddy, you’ll do permanent damage. Stop it! There’s plenty of time to ride Post this spring and summer and next fall. Ride Syncline or somewhere else! Cows will be going in very soon on Hospital Hills, perhaps today. Once they are in, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.
