Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! First things first: today is the Locals Only sale at Big Winds. It starts at 9am, which is really early for the poor staff, so they’ll be providing you (and themselves) with some coffee and snacks. Or you could shred some nuking east wind. Or you could do both! Tomorrow you can shred nuking west wind. And guess what you can do Monday afternoon? Shred nuking east wind. For reals, if you count both the east and west wind, this four day stretch (starting yesterday) is the windiest we’ve had this year.

So, Saturday. Early pressures were 29.85/30.04/30.05 for east gradients of 0.21 and 0.01. Readings at 5:30am were 52 at Iwash (Hard Winds a’Blowing!), 29 at Stevenson, and 18 at Viento. Expect a windy morning: 40-45 at Iwash (Rooster), 30-35 at Stevenson, 20ish at Viento. The wind holds as long as the daylight does. Overnight, it shuts off and then turns westerly. River flow yesterday was 94-142kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 47F.

Sunday’s your big west wind day. This looks a lot like last Saturday – a strong cold front bearing strong upper-level wind slams into us. The timing actually looks pretty darn good now. Dawn Patrol will be 25-29 from Iwash Rock all the way to Hermiston. As a low moves into BC, strong upper level winds arrive and touch down. Add in building offshore high pressure for a nearly-ideal fall/winter setup. By 10am or so, areas west of The Dalles rise to gusty 30-40mph. East of The Dalles, you’ll find 28-32. Afternoon wind backs off into the low-mid 20’s west of The Dalles and maintains at 26-30+ east of The Dalles. The wind will fade late afternoon, but you’ll probably be tired out by then! As of this morning, models suggest the strong wind will extend all the way to Hermiston and last for many hours. Whatever you may have been dreaming of is on the table. That said, the air is cold, the water is cold, and you should take safety precautions. Wear a PFD and helmet. Keep an eye on your buddies. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! High temp: 48F and partly cloudy with sprinkles for Hood River. 50F and sunny for Arlington.

Monday may start out light and variable, but it wont’ stay that way. Afternoon wind, should the timing stay as currently forecast, rises to 40mph at Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson under sunny sky. High temp: 48F. Strong east wind Tuesday morning fades to moderate in the afternoon. That’s enough for now. See you at Big Winds, and see you on the water tomorrow!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

While there’s not enough snow in the forecast to get all our resorts open, there’s a nice system coming our way this weekend. Ya gotta smile at that. 5000′ will pick up 8-12”, enough for you to play in the snow, if not enough for you to ride the lifts. Let’s look at the details…

Saturday looks cloudy until early evening. The heavens open up and drop some rain, but not for long. That rain quickly transitions to snow with strong wind. The snow level will be 8000′ this morning, 5000′ around 10pm, and 3000-3500′ after midnight. In the transition period, about 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast. Call that half rain and half snow for 2-4” of new snow at 5000′ overnight. Wind will be SW 10 in the morning rising to WSW 30-35 in the evening and turning to W 45-50 overnight.

Blasting west wind keeps the snow going through much of Sunday. The snow level will be 3000-3500′ during the day, 2500′ in the evening, and will bounce around overnight (when it’ll be dry) as warmer air slowly arrives. By early Monday, temps will be 0C to +1C all the way up to 8000′. Anyway, back to snowfall, about 0.7” to 0.8” WE is forecast during the day for 6-9” new. Wind will pile that snow up on the leeward slopes: W 50 in the morning, WNW 45-55 mid-morning, and W 35 in the afternoon. Overnight, the wind turns northerly, increasing at elevation, but probably light at 5000′. Driving the passes? Expect blizzard conditions in the morning.

Monday looks sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ early and will eventually rise to 13,000′ (wow) overnight. If you’re going to play in the snow, do it as early as possible. Wind will be light northerly in the morning, variable to 10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight. Clear sky and warm weather sticks around Tuesday with westerlies at 10-15mph. Our next weather system arrives Wednesday evening. This one starts with rain and transitions to snow. Not a lot of precip is forecast – probably around a quarter inch. After that, we’re looking at dry weather through the following weekend, mostly likely. Well, we won’t have day-after-Thanksgiving skiing, but the mountains sure will look pretty! Enjoy!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Nothing this morning gives way to high clouds this afternoon and rain this evening. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be rainy to start and then sprinkly. Temps start in the low 40’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Nuking west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Monday will be partial Nothing and then sunny. Temps start in the low 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Building easterlies. No rainbows.
