Saturday. Last chance for a hot day. Get it while you can!

Not only is there no wind in Hood River this morning, there’s no gradient either. And that’s awesome news for all those early-bird fishermen sitting out there at the mouth of the White Salmon River. 43,016 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday, meaning there are lots of fish waiting to transform from “fish” into “dinner”.…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Back to the wind forecast, it’ll be a bit too windy for fishing come noon, when the wind should pick up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. That won’t be the end of it: as the heat low shifts eastward and cooler air moves into the valleys, the Gorge wind will pick up to 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus, filling in at Arlington late in the day. Swell, more than likely will be gusty and unreliable except for a couple of hours early afternoon; you’ll be better off chasing wind from Lyle eastward. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

We’ll see a big marine push tomorrow with a 15 degree drop in high temps over today. The exact location of the strongest, steadiest wind will depend on how far west the marine clouds penetrate… meaning there’s a bit of a hedge factor in tomorrow’s forecast. Expect 21-24+ for Dawn Patrol just east of the clouds with up-and-down 13-16 under the clouds. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll see 28-32 from the cloud line all the way east to Three Mile.

A big shift in the weather starts on Monday as a trough of low pressure moves inland and a frontal system swings across the region in the evening. Expect 12-15 to start, strongest near Hood River, with gusty 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been learning a lot about intergenerational trauma and learned behaviors recently. No, I haven’t been reading a book. I’ve been observing the way my family interacts with the world. They come from a place of suspicion. From a place of inflexibility. From a place where every interaction is perceived as carrying the potential for danger, oppression, and violence of some sort.

That used to be me too. The beliefs were unconscious, but they were there. I’m stunned to see my former worldview played out by my family. It all looks so bizarre from where I am now.

That raises a question for me about the source of our core beliefs (unconscious assumptions about the working of the world) and how they play out. We have likely incorporated our family’s worldview, whether that worldview is helpful or undermines us. It’s incredibly difficult to see those patterns in ourselves. After all, that’s the culture we were raised in, steeped in, and educated in for many, many, many hours.

If you look at what you dislike (or like) about your parents’ behavior, and you’re gentle about your introspection, you’ll likely see how you repeat those patterns. And when you see those patterns, you can change them if they’re hurting you and amplify them if they’re helping you. And that’ll give you freedom from being controlled by the past. It’s a difficult road, but it’s possible. And it’ll make your life more awesome. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Once again we’re starting out clear and cool, so open up your windows and trap some of those slow-moving air molecules. You’ll be so glad you did when the air warms is 40 degrees warmer this afternoon. While you’re trapping that air, however, you may be cold. Grab a blankie, a cup of tea or coffee, and snuggle up with a stuffie, and you’ll be okay. Expect temps in the mid 50’s this morning and the mid 90’s this afternoon. Light wind early, strong wind late.

Tomorrow starts off with temps in the upper 50’s and climbs to the low 80’s. Nuking wind. Partly cloudy in the afternoon. Expect a partly cloudy start on Monday with a colorful sunrise and a mostly cloudy finish with a colorful sunset and a chance of showers overnight. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. Tuesday looks rainbowy and Wednesday looks drenching as the remnants of Hurricane Hilo slam into the PNW.

Road and Mountain Biking

This looks like a lovely morning for a road bike ride, and as soon as I’m done with what I’m doing right now, I’m headed out there. In trail news, no news is news. There’s a work party on a new 2-mile section of the 170 today. Meet at Binn’s Hill staging area at 9am to participate.

Northwave’s Locals’ Week Deals

It’s been a long and busy summer here in the Gorge, and Northwave would like to welcome you to Local’s Week! Live here? Your playground belongs to you again now that the kids are back in school, the teachers have returned to work, and the White Sprinter Vans are starting to hibernate for the winter. To celebrate, Northwave is offering sales on sails AND 15% off all sail repairs for all brands of sails. My favorite: the new window. If your window is cloudy, and you can’t see through it any more, get a new one. Not only will you be able to better see the other sailors, kiters, SUPers, and surfskis around you, you’ll also have a better view of the unicorns, rainbows, and Gorge scenery. Trust me on this one – it’s about $50 for a new window and worth every penny.

Upcoming Events

Today’s a busy one: There’s a trail work party on a new section of the 170 in Post Canyon today. Meet at Binns Hill staging area at 9 to help out. There’s a cleanup on the headwaters of the Salmon River at Timberline this morning. The Aluminum Man triathlon and Duathlon takes place in The Dalles today, and there’s a group trail run leaving the bottom of Post Canyon Road at 8. There’s also a race in Bingen this morning as part of the Huckleberry Festival, and there’s the Huck Fest skateboarding contest in Bingen tomorrow at 11am.

If you want to get your meditation on, there’s a free half-day retreat from 1-5 at Yoga Samadhi today.

Tomorrow’s also the Rural Rampage bike race where teams of two race all over Hood River completing all sorts of tasks. This benefits the Hood River Wrestling Club and Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute. Next weekend is the Gorge Kids Triathlon and the Music Festival of the Gorge.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
