Gorge Wind Forecast

Despite the heat, July is showing up will all the wind you could want. We’ll have westerlies in at least the “moderate” zone through Tuesday; models then hint at a cooldown to “normal” temps with an associated increase in stronger wind.

Looking closer at Saturday, we find that NWS has posted a Red Flag Warning for a combo of strong wind, low humidity, and dry fuels. Do be careful out there with your flames. On the river, the day starts with gradients of 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc) with a 1028 reading offshore. You’ll want to focus your attention west of The Dalles today. Early westerlies will be 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 most other places. Models suggest a slow build to 25-28. The wind fills in by early afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. East of there, you’ll find 13-167 to the peaches-and-apricots zone at Maryhill and Arlington this morning. 22-25 later afternoon at Rufus and 18-22 at Arlington. River flow is late-summer low: 109kcfs. River temp is late-summer warm: 69F. High temp for Hood River: 88F.

Moving on to Sunday, we see a similar setup, but not quite so much wind. The day starts with 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with 8-11 everywhere else. That’s pretty much the call for most of the day. As a trough approaches the coast in the evening, the wind will pick up to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 at Rufus and light/variable wind east of there. High temp: 88F.

While the trough may deepen the marine layer a bit Monday morning, it’s likely to be a short-lived increase in cloud cover. Morning westerlies start at 20-23 from Viento to Mosier and rise to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Tuesday looks similar. Models currently suggest stronger wind on Wednesday and Thursday.

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
