Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s cloudy up on Mt. Hood this morning (it’s Saturday, btw), and shall remain cloudy today with snow tonight. The snow level will be 6000′ for the daylight hours, dropping to 3000′ after sunset and 1500′ after midnight. We’ll see the precip start up around 1pm in the form of very wet snow or mixed precipitation, but it’ll quickly turn to snow. About .1” water value (WV) will fall as who-knows-what. That’ll be followed by .5-.6” WV of snow between 4pm today and 4am Sunday. With the snow level at 3000′ or less, we should see 5-7” of snow overnight. Wind today will be SW 15 early, turning to W 30 this afternoon and falling to NW 20 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Sunday looks colder with light snowfall in the morning and heavy snowfall (or mixed precip) overnight. The big story of the Sunday night storm is the wind – once the front passes, we’ll have strong NW wind, and that will give us heavy orographic snowfall. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, 5500′ mid-storm, and 2000′ on Monday morning. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 3-4” of new snow. We’ll see 1-1.5” WV overnight. There may be a period of rain, mixed precip, or very wet snow between 6pm and midnight, which will lower snowfall totals. That said, I think we’ll see 8-10” of new snow between 4pm Sunday and 4am Monday. Wind on Sunday will be NW 20 early, building to W 55 in the evening. Whoa.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Monday looks snowy and windy, especially in the morning. The snow level will be 2000′ all day long. We’ll see .6-.8” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 7-10” of fluffy new snow. We’ll see another .2” WV overnight, for 2-3” of new snow. Wind will be potentially lift-stopping early, at WNW 50. That will slowly fade to WNW 30 in the afternoon and NW 15 overnight. Tuesday looks partly cloudy and cool, with the snow level at 2000′. Add in NW wind at 15 early and calm wind in the afternoon to complete the picture. The next system is forecast for Wednesday evening into Thursday morning with the snow level right around 5000′.
Just FYI, Timberline and Meadows are both open, and Skibowl has tubing lanes open. Yay, Skibowl.
Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Saturday morning and we have a nice strong round of east wind right now: 30-35 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 15ish at Steven’s Locks. You could go chasing that, but you’ll need to jump on it because we’ll be seeing westerlies after noon. Expect a brief period of 20-23+ at all locations between 1pm and 4pm. Sunday starts off with W 7-10 everywhere and picks up to 23-26 east of Hood River (12-15 in the western Gorge) between 10am and 2pm. We’ll see very strong west wind overnight. Monday starts off ripping windy, with W 26-30 from Mosier to Maryhill. The wind will last all day, likely filling in at Swell but remaining in the 20-23 range at Steven’s Locks and Arlington. After 1pm, the wind will back off to 22-25 everywhere. Tuesday looks light and variable.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m thinking this morning, totally randomly, about what it’s like when we lose someone close to us. Although we think of ourselves as individual beings, most of us experience intense pain upon the loss of a loved one.
Other sorts of pain have visible, physical causes. For example, it kinda hurts when we cut ourselves with a knife. And it hurts when we crash our bikes and land on rocks. The flu, caused by a virus, hurts us. But the loss of a person is excruciatingly painful, doesn’t have a direct physical cause, but is most definitely a high-impact event.
Some people might argue that it’s all in our heads. I’d argue that we’re actually connected in some magical, neuronal way. When that connection is severed, it’s no different than having our skin lacerated by a knife, coarse pavement, or rocks. We just can’t see it. It’s pretty awe-inspiring to contemplate loss in this way – what exactly is the mechanism that causes all that pain?
Anyway, just something random for you to contemplate today. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Really. It’s almost too muddy to jog in Post Canyon right now. I jogged there yesterday, and came home muddy. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.
Upcoming Events
Coming up this morning, there’s community yoga in Spanish at 7am at Flow Yoga in Hood River. There’s a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. The Cold Lap cyclocross ride is at Dirty Fingers today at 3pm. Coming up tomorrow: free yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. No ping pong tomorrow. Rugby is at 3pm at the Mosier School.
Have an awesome day today!
