When I woke up (after 8am, my goodness!) the iWindsurf said there was an easterly gradient. The clouds are moving from west to east, so if that gradient hasn’t shifted yet, I’ll eat my own socks! Anyway, a 969mb low pressure system is hanging out off Vancouver Island this morning. As it moves inland the wind will pick up in the eastern Gorge. This is most definitely not an ideal setup, so the wind is going to be gusty and unreliable. That said, the models insist we’ll see a period of 26-30+ from 2pm to 6pm or so east of Maryhill. Don’t expect much between Steven’s Locks and Maryhill today – the gradient will be more conducive to southerly synoptic-scale wind than westerly wind. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
I made the mistake of not writing down the precip totals as I was gathering info this morning. then the model refreshed and I didn’t have access. Good thing it’s not quite ski season yet! Today is Saturday, and you can expect lots of rain on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 10,000′ this afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Around 2” of rain will fall, mixed with wet snow at times. Wind will be SW 25 early, SW 55 midday, and SW 25 overnight.
Sunday looks cooler with the snow level at 6500′ early and 5500′ after 8am. This is where my precit info ends, but I think we’ll see .4-.6” water value for a couple inches of new snow above 5500′. Wind will be SW 30 early, falling to SW 20 after midnight. Monday sees the snow level at 5500′ early, rising to 6500′ as the precip ends around 11am. Precip returns with the snow level around 5500′ late in the evening. Wind will be W 40 for much of the day, becoming SW 20 late in the evening.
Random Morning Thoughts
Today’s Gorge Happiness suggestion was to sleep in. That’s fortunate, because I didn’t wake up until 8:15 due to my malfunctioning CatAlarm. Gorge Happiness has another suggestion today: The Hood River Happiness Group meets at the Hood River Library at 4pm.
They’ll be talking about Rick Hanson’s work combining neuroscience, Buddhist teachings and therapy. I highly recommend checking out any of Rick’s books – they teach you how to rewire your brain so your pleasant neural networks fire off more than your unpleasant neural networks. I can say from personal experience that this stuff works. See you there, awesome people.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking
It occurred to me yesterday afternoon that the Kleeway might be just fine to ride. It was – boy does that piece of trail dry out fast! It’s certainly not fine now. And you probably don’t want to be riding anything other than your spin bike today!
Upcoming Events
It’s Harvest Fest down at the Hood River Event Site this weekend, all weekend long. I did some gleaning yesterday, also known as CropFit, and now I’m quite sore. I don’t think Harvest Fest will make you sore. There was a trail run this morning, as always at 8am in Post Canyon. There’s Zumba at the Columbia Gorge Dance Academy at 10. At 4pm tonight, there’s a Happiness Group at the Hood River Library from 4-5pm.
Have an awesome day today!
