Saturday. It’s a windy, windy weekend in the Gorge. Come play with us! Kite-only swap tonight 5-8pm @ Windance.

I’m surprised there isn’t more wind out there this morning, given what the models were predicting for gradients last night. Instead of a massive cross-Cascade difference, we have .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) with westerlies in the upper teens through the whole Gorge. I suspect continued instability in the desert is influencing the wind speed. Anyway, the wind will pick up today, but the convection may lessen the predictability (as it did yesterday, grrr). Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

All that said, our friends the weather models are predicting a quick build to 26-30 by midday from Mosier to Maryhill, with 30-35 possible at Doug’s late and 26-30 at Arlington late. Swell City, under the clouds, is probably going to max out at gusty 22-25 midday to early afternoon, unless the clouds miraculously burn way back. Stevenson will stay in the upper teens. Now, I mentioned some big numbers. If the thunderstorms stick around in the desert all day, the windspeeds will be less. In addition, if you see high clouds out in the desert, the wind will most likely be the wrong direction for the Rufus stretch of the river. Anyway, best chance for strong, reliable wind will be from Mosier to Avery today.

It looks like the atmospheric instability will lessen tomorrow, and that means the wind should be more predictable for me and more reliable for all of us. Models are insisting on Dawn Patrol in the low to mid twenties from Swell to Mosier. Without significant early heating in the desert, that’s probably overly optimistic. I think upper teens to low twenties is more likely. By tomorrow afternoon, we’ll have 26-30 from Swell to Maryhill, with a better wind direction than today.

Monday starts off with 13-16 and picks up to 24-28, strongest from Swell to Doug’s, and likely to fill in at Stevenson and Maryhill. Westerlies continue in some form on Tuesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have a lot of thoughts running through my head this morning (partly because I’m working on my reflective journal for my class), and I’m censoring most of them from the blog because they feel too personal to share. And that’s got me thinking about what we share and not, and what certain people can share because of the position they occupy.

The most obvious example is Brene Brown and her openness about shame and vulnerability. She’s a public figure associated with the concept of vulnerability, and that allows her to be as open as she chooses. Closer to home, my professor at PSU often shares stories of her struggles with anxiety, or situations when she did out-of-her-right-mind things because her shadow self was running the show. And it’s okay for her to do that, because she’s in a position of power where she makes the rules for what’s appropriate.

Our society has rules that being vulnerable and sharing deeply is not okay. We often shame people in peer/work/social contexts for being genuine and open. Those are rules we’ve created, and we can change them if we choose. So, next time you self-censor, notice why you are doing so. And maybe share just a tiny bit more than your censor wants. We all want to be true to ourselves, we all want to be seen and known, and the only way we can do that is to take the risk of being more who we are. Be yourself and change the world. =)

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy outside my window this morning, with marine clouds down low and convective debris up high. The partly cloudy weather will continue today, with another chance of t-storms out in the desert. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with decreasing chances of thunder in the desert. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows. Continue ad infinitum.

Road and Mountain Biking

I took a lap in Post Canyon yesterday, and it’s a mix of tack, hardpack and ball bearings. And the Kleeway is still awesome. And it’s nice to have Mobius back, because now there are more options for fun rides. Road bikers, I hope you like wind, because it’s going to be windy for the next several days. If you don’t like wind, head up in elevation for less air molecule movement.
