Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)
Yesterday afternoon at Arlington was nothing short of ridiculously windy. As a matter of fact, I heard a word yesterday that I hadn’t heard since the ’90’s: “fukitznükin”. Yes, it was that windy. Today will not be as windy (which most of you are probably pleased about, because 2.9 sailing isn’t everyone’s cup of don’t-drink-this Columbia River water). Before I forget, Grant Myrdal was out shooting photos at The Wall until about 3pm yesterday, and then he was shooting photos at Arlington until late in the afternoon. If you were there, he may have snapped a photo of you!
Gradients at 5am today were .07 (pdx-dls), .04 (dls-psc) and .31 (eph-dls), and the low and mid clouds were past Hood River. Midday heating will nudge the wind up, and an approaching shortwave late this afternoon will give it another bump and shift the location a bit. So, expect 13-16 through mid-morning pretty much everywhere (maybe a little less at Doug’s/Rowena). The wind will pick up to 22-25 midday from Stevenson to Rufus with a little less at Arlington. As that shortwave nears Oregon this afternoon, the wind will jump to gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus with a dropoff to 16-19 from Viento to Mosier.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.
Tomorrow sees high pressure building over the Northwest. Models suggest we’ll start off with 10-13 from Viento to Mosier at dawn. If the models are correct (and I’m not so sure they are), the wind will back off midday and pick back up to 10-13 late in the afternoon, filling in from Stevenson to The Dalles.
Monday starts with 10-13 and slowly builds to 13-16 in the afternoon, strongest from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. Tuesday looks like light easterlies.
Coast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/15-20/30+, NW swell 5′ @ 8 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/20-25/30+, NW 2′ @ 8 seconds. Monday: 15-20/25-30/30+, W 3 @ 12.
Jones n’ Sauvies beta test forecast. Jones today, 13-16.. Jones tomorrow, 21-24. Jones Monday, 14-17. Sauvie’s today, 5-8. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 13-16. Sauvie’s Monday, 10-13.
Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Nothing to say here today.
Random Morning Thoughts
I was out at Arlington yesterday sitting in the car taking a break after a long session of 39-51mph wind. Unicorns were stampeding up the river, and smoke was blowing off the tops of the waves. It was a big day. I found myself becoming inured to the charm of the view. I even caught myself thinking, “It doesn’t look that good out there.”
I immediately realized the sheer silliness of that belief; it was awesome and awe-inspiring, but I wasn’t feeling it. I said to myself, “This won’t do.” I closed my eyes and watched my breath for a minute to clear my mind. When I opened my eyes, I looked at the river with fresh eyes, as if I’d just arrived at the launch.
It was clearly 100% awesome.
When you’ve been doing something, anything, for a long time, be that 30 minutes or 30 years, your mind no longer automatically reacts with curiosity, awe, and wonder. What a bummer that is! So, it’s important to cultivate those life-sustaining emotions by looking at the world with fresh eyes.
You can try that right now. Close your eyes for 30 seconds and pretend you’ve never seen a computer or smartphone before. Really cultivate a state of curiosity and wonder. Then open your eyes and look at your electronic device with new eyes. Neat, huh?
Now that you have that trick down, take it out in the world. Start by using it next time you head to the beach. Pretend it’s your first time there. Pretend you’re on vacation. Pretend you’ll only be at that place for one day. For one hour. See how your actions and reactions change. You’ll be surprised how awesome your day becomes!
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s partly cloudy this morning and shall continue to be today as an upper level low moves inland later this afternoon. We’ll see temps in the mid 60’s this morning and mid 70’s this afternoon with a slight chance of thunderstorms later today. Strong wind, 2% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow may start off with a few marine clouds, but quickly becomes clear. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Sunday starts off in the upper 50’s and climbs to the upper 80’s. Light wind. No rainbows.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Although the USFS website says that portions of the 23 road are closed, it turns out, according to a friend of mine from Trout Lake, that the portions of the 23 road on the Forest Loop are open. So, if you’d like to go for a bike ride where you can see the Cougar Creek Fire, that option is available. Other than that, it sprinkled last night. I doubt that it was enough to help the trails, but any sprinkles are better than no sprinkles.

Upcoming Events
Today’s a busy one in the Gorge. The Post Canyon 50k and half marathon is happening on the trails, so be prepared for lots of runners and yield to the racers if you’re out there on a bike. On the Washington side of the river, the Skamania County Fair 5k and 10k happens today, for those of you who think 50k is too far to run. Also today, it’s the annual Double Damned sailboat race from Cascade Locks to The Dalles and the final Gorge Cup windsurfing race of the season, followed by a BBQ sponsored by Da Kine.
In weekly events, there’s an 8am trail run from the bottom of Post Canyon Road, and there’s a beginner women’s bike ride leaving Mt. View Cylces at 9am.
This evening is the annual King of the Hook longboard freestyle contest. Head down to the Hook at 5 to watch some impressive flexibility and costumes combined with windsurfing. After that, you can catch the movie Akeelah and the Bee at Jackson Park at dusk. Or you can go to the Post Canyon 50k afterparty at Kickstand Coffee.
Tomorrow is community yoga day. There’s a class at 9am at Yoga Samadhi, one at 4pm at Pure Yoga, and one at 6pm at Root Down Yoga.
Your daily Cougar Creek fire update has the blaze at 21,800 acres.
Have an awesome day today!
