Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mountain weather’s looking a bit on the wild side for the next few days as a powerful jet and atmospheric river slam right into Mt. Hood. A few inches of snow on Saturday will be followed by heavy rain Sunday and possibly Monday as well. The forecast holds hope for the middle of next week, when up to a foot of snow is possible.

For Saturday, we’ll be in cool air during the day with snow. Rain starts up after midnight. The snow level will be 3500′ ish all day. It rises to 6000′ after midnight. About 0.4” water value (WV) falls as snow during the day, for 4” of new. 1.0” WV falls overnight. 0.4” should fall as snow, for 3-4” of dense snow. After that: 0.6” rain before sunrise. Wind will be SW 30+ all day and night.

Sunday looks very rainy. The snow level will be 6000′-7000′. About 2.0” rain falls during the day. Another 1.2” rain falls overnight. Wind will be SW 30+ during the day and WSW 40-50 overnight. Monday’s not really possible to predict: the GFS takes the bulk of the precip to the south by daybreak for a partly cloudy day. The Euro keeps the precip local until midday, keeping the heavy rain going. So… we’ll just have to wait and see.

Longer range predictions include snow for Wednesday into Thursday. As of right now, 6-12” looks like a possibility. That said, this is way too far out to be making accurate or precise predictions. Just bookmark it and we’ll return to it!

Gorge Wind

A series of storms will move through the region for the next few days followed by brief high pressure on Tuesday. This will set up strong and very gusty westerlies at times over the next 72 hours. For Saturday, we start with easterlies at 25-30 near Rooster with 10-15 near Viento and Stevenson. After 11am, the wind turns westerly: gusty 18-22 with rain from Stevenson to The Dalles and gusty 25-29 from The Dalles to Arlington. Sunday brings easterlies all day: 20-25 near Rooster Rock and 10-15 near Stevenson. That’ll be accompanied by pouring rain.

Monday brings a period of strong westerlies early in the morning, but those fade as high pressure builds inland. The day starts with gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Arlington. The wind picks up to gusty 27-31 from The Dalles to Arlington through noon and then fades to 10-13. Offshore high pressure on Tuesday sets up steadier afternoon westerlies at 26-30, possibly from Swell to Avery, but more likely from Mosier to Avery.

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!

Upcoming Events

Saturday is the first Garden Party and Potluck of the year at Pacific Hermitage. Potluck starts at 10:30. Work party starts at 1pm. Saturday is also the Fred Meyer Fuchsia Sale from 7am to 4pm – bring your own pots and they will fill them with Black Gold soil. Sunday is the Gorge Gravel Grinder in The Dalles (sold out). WET! Hood River Appreciation Day at Meadows, scheduled for Sunday, will be rescheduled. Dirty Fingers has the “Sunday Service” ride Sunday morning. That too will probably be rescheduled.
