Gorge Wind Forecast

Low pressure over the region on Saturday will squash the early morning gradient (.06) into pretty much nothing by the afternoon. That means we’ll start the day with W 5-10 and end the day with no wind. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow today is 369kcfs at The Dalles, meaning the current at Rufus would be quite strong.

Sunday looks complex. A low pressure system moves into the desert during the day. That will increase the westerly flow but also destabilize the atmosphere. As the day goes on, the western half of the state will see stabilization while the east sees a good chance of thunder. This means the most reliable wind will be in the west. So… we’ll see light wind Sunday morning. Mid to late afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 26-30+ from Swell to Rufus. There’s also a good chance of rain in that stretch of river. The combo doesn’t lead to a lot of confidence in this forecast, but it’s worth clearing your schedule late afternoon just in case.

Monday starts off with W 17-20 or a touch more. High pressure builds inland during the afternoon and takes the wind down to the 9-13 or less range. Models disagree on the wind strength Tuesday, but there is a possibility of very strong westerlies late in the day.

Random Morning Thoughts

Sometimes our mood swings can seem out of control. Emotions vary… that’s just the way it is, right? Well… not exactly. They do, but they can also build up to a tipping point, after which we feel overwhelmed. For the sake of our mental health, it’s important to understand this cycle. That gives us the power to interrupt it earlier.

In my limited experience, this buildup seems to happen when our biggest needs, our most sensitive triggers, are not being met. For example, if I need control and feel helpless without it, I might start to spiral when other people have significant power over me. If I have a fear of abandonment, I might get overwhelmed by situations where I experience the loss of life supports.

Looking back over our lives and understanding our triggers allows us to be proactive. Early recognition of the cycle allows us to combat it directly. For example, if I need control and feel powerless due to a situation, I can develop control in a different part of my life. So… take a little time to understand what sets you off. Develop ways to combat that directly. That will give you more peace. May you be happy. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s a work party on the 140 trail this morning. Meet at the intersection of Riorden Hill Road and Post Canyon Road at 9am. Lewis River is reportedly open to the landslide from the bottom. Knebal, Eightmile, and Bottle Prairie are not open. I have a report of 5-7 trees down on the singletrack section of Surveyor’s with the rest rideable. Kitchen Sink is apparently riding good. Tomorrow is a fundraiser ride for the National Psoriasis Foundation. That leaves Kickstand Coffee at 10am.

Upcoming Events

You could go for a group trail run at 8 in Post Canyon, help out Hood River County on the 140 trail at 9am, or do a free bootcamp workout at Sorosis park at 10. The Eta Aquarids meteor shower continues tonight in the wee hours, assuming you can find a cloud-free place to watch it.

Tomorrow is the Dog River Super D bike race off highway 35, so skip that trail. If you’re hiking Dog Mountain, you’ll need a permit, and you can also take a bus from the Skamania Fairgrounds to avoid the parking hassles. There’s a by-donation group bike ride Sunday at 10am at Kickstand Coffee, and there are free art classes for kids (adults must be there too) from 1 to 3 on Sunday at Columbia Art Gallery. There’s also free yoga (by-donation) at 9am Sunday at Yoga Samadhi.
