Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

It seems like we’ve had a lot of mornings lately where I say something like this: “It’s not windy at all this morning, but just you wait…” Anyway, today, with an upper level low moving onshore, is another one of those days. Expect light and variable wind this morning that slowly builds to up-and-down, gusty, not-light wind later. We should see 12-15 by midday from Stevenson to Doug’s, picking up to gusty 21-24 this afternoon from Mosier to Arlington. It’s hard to make a call for Stevenson… it’s likely going to end up in the rain zone, making the wind difficult to predict. Hood River will be right on the edge, so it’s like going to stay in the gusty 12-15 range. Head east for a better selection of wind speeds. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow sees that upper level low continue to shift east. That’ll start us off with westerlies at 7-10 pretty much everywhere except Stevenson. By midday, we’ll have 11-14 pretty much everywhere. Later in the afternoon, as high pressure builds off the coast and the low goes bye-bye, we’ll see 23-26 from Lyle to Arlington. Tomorrow’s wind should be a bit steadier than today’s.

Another weak weather system moves in on Monday, setting us up for another round of gusty westerlies. Expect 10-13 to start with 23-26 in the afternoon from Hood River to Rufus. It doesn’t look like we’ll see much wind on Tuesday and Wednesday, but that could change.

Out on the coast, you’ll see S 10-15 today with a W swell of 7′ at 14 seconds. Tomorrow looks LTV except the south coast (10-15), with W 8′ @ 12. Expect LTV Monday with W 6′ @ 10 (surfing!).

No wind at Jones or Sauvie’s for the next three days.

Random Morning Thoughts

Emotions are fascinating things. They come and they go, and we don’t have a lot of control over them. Let me repeat that: these things that live inside our bodies are, in a large part, outside our control. We can’t really keep them from arising. We can, however, keep from prolonging the unpleasant feelings. And we can cultivate the pleasant feelings so they are more likely to arise.

Emotions are much like yellow jacket nests. If you trip on a yellow jacket nest, you don’t go back and poke it with a stick, right? Our thoughts about our emotions are like sticks. When we look at an arisen emotion and make up stories about it, we’re poking at it. Next time you find yourself poking the stick at an unpleasant emotion, stop! Just say “hi” to the experience. Don’t speculate about it. Don’t wish it would go away. These metaphorical pokings will not help you. Just say “hi” and keep on with your day. And be nice to yourself. That’s important. Really important.

If you happen to come across a pleasant emotion (love, acceptance, joy), don’t poke at that either (no thoughts about it, in other words!) Just sit with that lovely feeling, whatever it is, and let it wash over you. Say “hi” and make friends. The epigenetics / interpersonal neurobiology / Hakomi folks will tell you to concentrate on that pleasant feeling and help it grow. That will burn it more deeply into your neural networks. I tend to agree with them, both on a philosophical level and from personal experience. Pretend that pleasant thing is a hot tub, and relax into it. But for goodness’ sakes, don’t create thoughts about it. Just feel!

If you do this enough, things will change in your world. It takes time and patience and consistency. But hey, you’re not going anywhere, right? You’re stuck in that body with its emotions for the rest of your life. You might as well get started now. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning, and cloudy it shall remain all day today. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. There’s a slight chance of showers all day today, but the predicted precip amounts have really backed off. Due to that, so have the rainbow chances; we’re at 43% right now.

Tomorrow looks mostly cloudy with just a slight chance of a few sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 14% chance of rainbows. Monday looks pretty much exactly like Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s about time for another shot of rain. In the meantime, it looks like the trails around the Badger Lake fire will reopen today. You can read all about it here. In road biking news, the next three days look blustery in the afternoon, so ride in the morning unless you enjoy headwinds.

Upcoming Events

At 8am this morning, just 8 minutes from right now as I type this, the Hood River Running Club has a trail run in Post Canyon. At 9am, Hood River County has a work party on the 170 trail: meet at Binn’s Hill Staging area. Biketoberfest is today at the Whoopdee trail: live music, raffles, food, and free Trek bike demos. That’s 10-5 at the Whoopdee Trail parking lot. This evening at 5:30 at HRVHS, it’s the annual Vampires and Victims run: dress in costume. Show up. Be assigned as a vampire or victim. Run. Be chased. Raise money for the HRVHS XC team. Simple fun. Today, by the way, is also Harvest Fest.

Tomorrow is a Cross Crusade cyclocross race at the EasyCLIMB trail. That’s a big one. It’s also the Superhero Fun Run in The Dalles, benefitting CASA, court appointed special advocates. There are three free yoga classes tomorrow. My favorite, the 9am at Yoga Samadhi, the Christ-centered 4pm YogaFaith class at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and the 6pm community yoga class at Root Down. C’mon Flow Yoga… you gotta step it up and add a community class to your schedule!

Have an awesome day today!
