Saturday: Happy Labor/Labour Day Weekend!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Offshore low pressure this weekend combines with the desert heat low and incoming weak weather impulses for moderate, gusty westerlies. High pressure building on Monday takes the wind down a few notches.

For Saturday, the morning wind starts out light with scattered teen readings – Viento, Doug’s, and Arlington. Gradients of .05 and .05 indicate it’s worth watching much of the Gorge today. Westerlies will need a couple hours for desert temps to climb; the wind slowly builds to 15-18 from Stevenson to Moiser by noon. As a weak weather system moves closer, the wind climbs to gusty 22-25 from the Event Site to The Dalles with 15-18 west of there and also at Rufus. Viento is likely to hold in the 22-25 range, but Swell will likely drop to 15-18 after a quick burst of low to mid 20’s. River flow is 123kcfs and temp is 70 degrees. PS. Today is the last swap meet of the season, happening at Luhr Jensen. Northwave is providing coffee and donuts.

A very similar setup on Sunday makes for a very similar wind day: light westerlies for the first few hours of the day. A slow build to 14-17 by noon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon westerlies at 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles (less at Swell, probably) and 10-13 near Rufus.

High pressure builds inland on Monday. Wind speeds drop in response. Morning westerlies look like 7-10 from Stevenson to Hood River. This is the sort of setup where the afternoon could do something entirely different than model predictions. Those models suggest light easterlies. I think the wind will probably hold at west 7-10 or so to Moiser. Light easterlies or light and variable wind are all you’ll find east of there. Tuesday’s forecast is for light east wind.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Saturday: SW5/LTW/LTV, SW swell 3′ at 16 seconds. Sunday: LTW/LTW/N10-15, W 3′ @ 10. Monday: 15-20/20-25/15-20, SW 4′ @ 16. Jones Saturday: 4-7. Sunday: 10-13. Monday: LTW. Sauvie’s Saturday: 4-7. Sunday: 10-13 late. Monday: 12-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

Approximately 0.2” of rain fell on Thursday, meaning some of our trails have been refreshed. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest! Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with a morning swap meet at the Luhr Jensen Parking lot in Hood River with free coffee and donuts provided by Northwave Sails. Blue Zones is putting on a cleanup and picnic at The Dalles Dam today from 10 to noon. If you head to Odell today, stop by Packer Orchards for an apple pie celebration from 10 to 4. The Huckfest big air kiteboarding event is in Stevenson today and tomorrow. If you still have energy tonight, the movie The Princess Bride plays at Meadows at 8, for $6 and the Incredibles 2 plays at Sorosis Park at 8 for free.

Looking ahead to Monday, Cascade Locks tries its hand at hosting the Roy Webster Cross Channel Swim for the first time. Timberline has a free mountain music festival full of grateful Dead tribute bands starting at Noon on Labor day.
