Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off clear and stays clear all day. Low clouds will be found below 5000′ or so all day long. The free air freezing level on Sunday will be less than 500′ all day. Wind on Sunday will be light and variable, less than 10mph, all day and all night.

Monday starts off clear, but high clouds move in by 10am. It’s possible there will be a few scattered flurries during the day on Monday, but there won’t be any accumulation until a stronger system moves in around 7pm. The snow level Monday will less than 1000′ through 7pm, rising to 4500-5000′ around midnight. If the current GFS run is correct, we’ll see very heavy snowfall overnight. Current expectations are for 1-1.2” water value (WV) for 10-12” of new snow between 7pm Monday and 4am Tuesday. Wind on Monday will be W 10 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, and a wicked W 50-60 after midnight. That’ll have an impact on snow quality on Tuesday, for sure.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Tuesday starts out with strong wind and continued heavy snowfall. The snow level will be 4500′ early, dipping to 2500′ midday before bouncing back to 4000′ in the evening. Current GFS run says we’ll see 1.2-1.4” WV between 4am and 4pm Tuesday, for 12-14” of new snow. The wind may be a bit of a problem, but it will also provide for continuous fresh tracks; expect W 60 early, W 45 midday, and WSW 30 after 4pm. As of right now, we’re expecting another 7-9” of new snow overnight on Tuesday. Just FYI, I will be on vacation between 12/29 and 1/4, but I will see you again in the new year!

Random Morning Thoughts

I spend a lot of time around the holidays thinking about people who don’t have family or the consistency of a reliable social support network. For many, the holidays are not a time of joy and happiness. Instead, holidays aggravate loneliness or bring up painful memories of lost loved ones. Perhaps you have a friend or two who fits into this category? Reach out to them, okay?

Reaching out means different things for different people. You can surprise a friend with a card telling them how much you appreciate them. You can bring them an unexpected gift (like someone did to me last night!!). You can invite them out of their home and into your life for those evenings that would otherwise become moments of painful introspection. You could even go to their home for a holiday dinner (like a friend of mine did last night).

The point is not to do a specific thing. It’s to do the thing that would mean the most to your friend. Yeah, it can be scary. You might worry that you wouldn’t know what to say to a person who’s hurting when most people are feeling joyful and loved. That’s okay. You can say that you don’t know what to say! Acknowledgment of the wordlessness of the situation is often the right thing to say.

So, while you’re enjoying your holidays, reach out to those who are not. And if you’re not enjoying the holidays, take a risk and reach out to include yourself in something that will lift your spirits, if only for a little while. Happy holidays. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy and damp and chilly this morning, and nothing shall change about that today except for the possibility of just a few sprinkles. Expect temps in the mid 30’s all day long, dropping below freezing tonight. Light west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks like a Nothing sort of day with a chance of partly cloudy conditions in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks like Nothing to start with higher clouds joining the fun by 10am. Heavier precip moves in after 6pm. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and low to mid 30’s in the afternoon. This makes for a tricky forecast overnight. We are likely to see snow and/or freezing rain through 7am Tuesday when temps will warm above freezing with the arrival of the west wind.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Things are still rather icy and snowy out there. Although Syncline is a possibility, you’ll be doing significant damage if you ride in places that were frozen overnight and have thawed in the daylight. Please consider riding gravel roads instead.

Upcoming Events

There’s Spanish language yoga at 7am at Flow, a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am, and the Cold Lap cyclocross ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm today. There are also a lot of NFL games today, so if you prefer to sit on the couch and yell at the TV, that’s an option.

Have an awesome day today!
