Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Weekend weather contains westerly winds. Consistency will be lacking as a series of weak weather systems moves along with a broad low pressure trough over the region. A few things to note: there’s a swap meet at Luhr Jensen this morning, and there’s one at Windance tomorrow. If you would like a Gorge is my Gym t-shirt, they are now available at 2nd Wind at 2nd and State Street in Hood River. You can also order them from me online.

Moderate offshore high pressure on Saturday combines with low pressure in the desert for moderate to strong, but gusty, westerlies. Morning gradients of .10 and .06 indicate the likely sweet spot is Mosier to Rufus today. Morning wind will be 17-21 everywhere. Afternoon: 17-21 Stevenson, gusty 25-29 Viento and Mosier, gusty 20-25 near Swell and Hood River, gusty 25-29 Rowena to Arlington. It is possible we’ll see a period of 28-32 from Rowena to Rufus this afternoon. Can’t promise you the direction will be amenable to easy riding on the Maryhill stretch, but the potential is there for strong wind. River flow is 121kcfs and temp is 65 degrees.

Sunday starts off with clouds at various levels, muggy weather, and light westerlies. Expect 10-13 in the morning from Stevenson to Swell. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Rufus. Monday looks partly cloudy and then sunny. Early wind will be 8-11 from Stevenson to Swell. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Rufus. Tuesday: very light wind early and gusty 20-24 in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: W5/NW5/1-20, SW swell 2′ at 15 seconds. Sunday: W5/NW5/30-35, SW 3′ @ 15. Monday: W5/NW5/25-30, SW 3′ @ 15. Jones Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: 5-8. Monday: 8-11. Sauvie’s Saturday: nope. Sunday: 7-10. Monday: nope.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

It’s swap meet weekend for the windsports folks. There’s one this morning at the Luhr Jensen parking lot in Hood River. There will be free coffee and donuts provided by Northwave Sails, and there’s a free intro to foil-boarding clinic at 10:30. The next swap meet comes right up tomorrow morning at Windance. No coffee or donuts at that one.

Other fun things today: a shop road bike ride form mountain view cycles at 8:45, the Wy’East Howl ultramarthon course preview at Mt. Hood Meadows at 9, and gorge Cup Windsurfing races all day long at the Hood River Event Site. There’s $5 yoga tomorrow morning at Samadhi in White Salmon, and there are free kids art classes at Columbia Art Gallery from 1 to 3.
