Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

There’s a lot of moisture locked into the ground and the upper-elevation snowpack now, but there’s not much snow on the ground at base area of the ski areas. It all washed away. We’re on track for a couple mostly dry days. One last quick-moving atmospheric river pummels the mountain on Monday. That one leaves a bit of snow in its wake. Temps next week look cool enough for snow, but there isn’t a lot of moisture predicted.

Saturday starts off brilliantly sunny on the slopes. High clouds move in and deepen as the day progresses, but it doesn’t appears we’ll see any precip. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ this morning and will slowly rise to 13,000′ overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 35-45 overnight.

Mist falls on the mountain all day Sunday. Orographic effects could turn the mist to drizzle. The snow level will be 12,000′ all day. Wind: WSW 35-45 all day becomes SW 25-50 overnight. Monday starts with clear sky, but the cold front quickly arrives with a few hours of very heavy rain. That switches to snow in the afternoon with blizzard conditions for a few hours as orographic effects keep the precipitation coming. The snow level will be 12,000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, 2000′ in the evening, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.9” rain is forecast by late afternoon. After the switch to snow, another 0.4” water equivalent falls, for 3-5” new, depending on the orographic help. Wind: SW 25-50 early. In the afternoon, the wind turns to WSW 50-55, holds through the evening, and becomes NW 50-60 after midnight. That sets up another inch or two or three of orographic snowfall before the sky clears Tuesday morning. After that, models disagree on the availability of moisture through the end of the week. So, no ski resorts… yet.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much for Saturday: light westerlies early turn around to easterlies at 5-10 at Rooster and 10-15 at Stevenson. River flow is 152kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 56F. Watch for debris in the river given the recent heavy rains. Sunday starts with gusty 15-25 west of Bonneville. Models suggest we’ll see moderate westerlies touch down unpredictably on the river. Keep your eyes open for gusty 15-20 between Mosier and Rufus and also at Viento. High temp: 63F with mist in the far western Gorge. Monday sees rapidly building westerlies as a powerful cold front slams into the Northwest. Heavy rain falls to The Dalles through mid-afternoon – beware of the impact on the wind. Models don’t agree on wind strength, but they do agree on this: the most likely super-strong westerlies will be in the far eastern Gorge. Drive pre-emptively. Daylight is gone early, and you’ll need to move fast to get this. High temp: 58F, dropping in the afternoon as the cold front swings through.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning turns high overcast and then more and more clouds. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with scattered misty or sprinkles, but should be mostly dry in Hood River. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 54% chance of rainbows. Monday starts dry and then turns torrentially rainy for a few hours, then sprinkly and super windy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Nuking westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

HRATS have a work party at Family Man this morning (Saturday, 11/13) at 9am. Significant rain in the last week means most trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t.

Local Events

Please send me information about outdoor or fitness-related events. You probably know about something I don’t!
