Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! It’s Saturday, and there’s not much wind in the forecast for this weekend. But there’s more than zero wind! Stronger westerlies are likely on Monday despite model disagreement about the precise speeds. On Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions are likely to be light. Beyond that, there’s simply too much range in the possible outcomes to dial in any sort of accurate Gorge wind forecast. So, let’s take a look at the weekend, shall we?
Saturday morning started with a LOT of boats out fishing thanks to ideal conditions: zero wind and plenty of cloud cover. Not much happens this morning – easterlies pick up to 10mph near Iwash/Rooster Rock and Stevenson for a couple hours. In the afternoon, westerlies slowly build. After 2pm, we’ll see 10-13mph from Stevenson to the Hatch or Hood River. Models suggest the zone from Avery to Rufus will build to 16-19mph this evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 76-108kcfs, river temp is 69.8F, and high temp forecast is 70F in Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
On Sunday, the west side low pressure system makes a move to the east. Models give us strange wind in response: early morning easterlies at 15-20mph near Rooster Rock with early morning westerlies at 17-20mph between Celilo and Arlington. Those westerlies quickly die off, and by midday, the entire Gorge goes light and variable. Sometime mid to late afternoon, the low moves inland. This gives us gusty 16-19mph, probably after 5pm, between Lyle and Boardman with 12-15mph between Stevenson and Mosier. Atmospheric instability is forecast west of Mosier and east of Arlington – both those zones will be subject to wind that doesn’t do what the forecast says it will! High temp: 71F.
The low moves inland on Monday and is replaced by high pressure offshore. Models call for wind, but they’re not sure how much. The GFS deterministic wants 27-30mph east of Mosier with 18-21mph west of Mosier. Euro ensembles: less optimistic about the eastern Gorge – maybe 22-25mph? Let’s wait a day or two and see if there’s more consensus. Highs: 70-75 degrees, warmest out east.
Monday and Tuesday both bring light easterlies or light/variable wind to start. Afternoon may bring a little west wind, but as of now, it doesn’t look like enough to get us on the river. Model agreement falls apart on Wednesday, so I’ll leave it here for now. See you on the Nch’i Wana one of these days! Good morning, neighbors! Cool weather continues through the weekend with plenty of good fishing weather for you to chase those tens of thousands of salmon! Warmer weather arrives by the middle of next week, and after that, uncertainty is too high to really make any solid predictions.
Thanks to a low spinning along the coast this morning, we’re cloudy and cool. That system may spin some drizzle our way this morning, and it may trigger some showers this afternoon despite clearing skies. Temps only make it to the upper 60s on the west side, and they only make it to 74 degrees from The Dalles out into the desert. Today’s wind will be nearly calm early, easterly at 10mph near Iwash (dick) Rock and Stevenson mid-morning, and westerly at 15mph between Stevenson and Rufus this afternoon.
Overnight, clouds return. We start Sunday morning cloudy to the west and partly high overcast east of The Dalles. Models hint at a period of rain between 2am and 8am between Rowena and Avery and south into south Wasco. The rain could even become a downpour! Between 8am and 11am, light drizzle is possible between Troutdale and Rowena. Morning temps: 45-55. Afternoon: 71-74. The wind is going to do some weird stuff on Sunday as Saturday’s low moves inland. We start with easterlies at 15-20mph near Iwash Rock with westerlies at 15-20mph between Avery and Arlington. By midday, the wind turns light and variable all through the Gorge. Afternoon: west wind slowly builds to 10-15mph west of Lyle and 15-20mph between Lyle and Boardman. You’ll find the perfect no-wind window in there somewhere to catch some of those salmon, I swear you will.
Monday brings another round of cool weather, but this cool weather will be windier. Morning temps: 45-55. Afternoon: 70 in Hood River, 75 in The Dalles, and 78 in the desert. West wind starts at 15-20mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 25mph from Mosier to Boardman. Afternoon: 20mph west of Lyle and 25-30mph east of Lyle to Threemile and 20-25mph near Boardman.
Warmer, calmer weather is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. As of this morning, Tuesday’s highs are forecast to be 77-81. Wednesday: 83-87. Both days are likely to bring light west wind after a light east wind start, but we’ll refine that forecast (and your chances of calm fishing conditions) as we get closer. After Wednesday, the range of possible outcomes increases enough to make forecasting a silly venture. So I won’t. Safe travels. -TATAS
