Saturday: gonna get real chilly out there!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s going to be mostly sunny for the next four days on the mountain before the next weather system moves in. Possible exception: Saturday afternoon and evening when cold air pouring in from the NE will create easterly orographic clouds and some light snowfall. Next significant precipitation is slated for Wednesday, but models disagree wildly on what will happen. Until then… perfect packed powder conditions and cold temps.

Saturday starts out clear. It looks like some easterly orographic clouds will build in the afternoon and evening, but the exact elevation of those clouds is unclear. Let’s call it partly to mostly cloudy this afternoon and evening with flurries. Free air freezing level (FAF): 0′. Mountain temps: teens to low 20’s, dropping overnight. Precip: Up to 0.1” water value (WV) in the afternoon and evening for up to an inch of new snow. Wind: light and variable during the day becoming E 10-15 tonight.

Sunday may see partly cloudy sky early, but the incoming air is so dry that the sky should clear quickly. FAF: 0′. Mountain temps: single digits to teens. Precip: none. Wind: E 10-15 early, E 5-10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. Monday: clear becoming partly cloudy. FAF: 0′. Temps: single digits early, teens later. Wind: light and variable early, NE 15 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. Tuesday: very similar.

A warmer system moves in from the SW on Wednesday, but models completely disagree on how this will play out. So, let’s just way we’ll probably see some snow Wednesday into Thursday and wait for models to converge on a solution. Hint: vote for the ECMWF, and enjoy the packed powder this week!

Gorge Wind

For Saturday, we’ll have easterlies at Rooster at 40-50 all day with 25-35 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Viento. Easterlies extend into the metro area. River flow is 87,900cfs and the gradient is E.17. River temp is 35 degrees. Sunday looks like E 45-55 at Roster and 30-40 at Stevenson. The wind will drop to 25-30 in the afternoon. Monday starts with 35-40 near Rooster and 20-25 in Cascade Locks. The wind backs off to 20-25 everywhere (including the metro area) in the afternoon. Easterlies continue Tuesday and Wednesday.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Silly rabbit… it’s not biking season in the Gorge. It’s XC skiing and BC skiing season! And Gorge Backcountry skiing. Remember, avalanche hazard does exist in the Gorge too. Be safe, and be wise in your decision making. Dig pits. Avoid wind-loaded steep slopes.

Upcoming Events

There are two events happening at Dirty Fingers Bike Shop. Today at 3pm, in lieu of the Cold Lap (canceled due to snow and ice), there’s a viewing of people racing bikes on cobbles. Ouch. At 7pm, you can view the Filmed by Bike festival at the shop. Other events today, the weekly Post Trail Run and Boot Camp workout at Sorosis Park, have made no peeps this week. I’m going to assume they are canceled due to snow and ice too. Not canceled: backcountry and XC skiing in the Gorge.
