Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a cool and windy Saturday morning. If you like wind, you’ll want to jump on it, because the westerlies will take a break for a couple of days after today. The early gradient today was .11 from Portland to The Dalles with just .01 east of the. With clear sky in Hood River and Portland, you’ll want to stay in the central Gorge today.

We’ll have 21-24 through late morning from Viento to Mosier with 5-10 in other locations. Given the forecast today, it seems likely that we’ll see the wind fade after late morning as the concrete jungle heats up. Stevenson should join in with 17-20 late morning. By early afternoon, the Viento to Mosier stretch will also fall to 17-20. Lyle to Doug’s will probably max out at 16-19 today, holding through late afternoon. Locations east of The Dalles will see 5-10 this morning and light west wind this afternoon.

Depending on where the heat low sets up tomorrow, we could see a couple of outcomes. Most likely is a heat low over the Willy Valley, leaving us with calm wind early, east 10-15 from Cascade Locks to Viento midday, and calm wind again in the afternoon as temps equalize. If east flow develops on a wider scale, we could see smoke from the Substation fire drift into the central Gorge. Wickedly hot weather everywhere on Sunday gives us calm wind for much of the day followed by west wind at 5-8 late in the afternoon between Stevenson and Hood River with calm wind everywhere else. At this point, the long-range forecast is calling for a return to moderate westerlies (with wicked hot temps) starting Tuesday.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 16-19. Sunday: 5-10. Monday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Saturday: 13-16. Sunday: 13-16. Monday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30+, NW swell 5′ at 7 seconds. Sunday: 10-25/15-20/light, NW 5′ @ 7. Monday: 15-20/15-20/Light, NW 4′ @ 16.

The Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles is currently closed and under a level 3 evacuation order due to the Substation Fire.
