Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Looking at the forecast for the next several days, today, Saturday, is the day you want to be on the mountain. The snow level goes up for the next three days, dropping briefly Sunday night and Tuesday night. While models disagree on the exact amount of mountain ugliness between now and Wednesday morning, the picture isn’t pretty from any viewing angle.
For Saturday, though, it will just a be a cloudy day. Rising snow levels tonight will bring a wee bit of mixed precip or mist. Snow level 2000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′-6500′ overnight. Precip starts around 7pm, falling as 0.1” water values (WV) of wet snow or mist. Wind will be W 30 early, SW 25-30 in the afternoon and evening.
Sunday brings light rain followed by light snow as the bulk of the precip stays to the north of the Columbia River. The ECMWF brings a heavier round of precip in overnight as snow, but the GFS does not. So… snow level 6500′ early, 7500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.1” WV falls as rain during the day. Another 0.1” to 0.3” WV falls as snow overnight, for 1-2” of not-dry snow. Wind will be SW 20-30 all day.
Monday starts off with light-but-not-dry snowfall and turns to heavy or extremely heavy rain, depending on the storm track. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 4000′ and rising fast in the afternoon, and 7500′-8000′ overnight. About 0.1” WV falls as snow during daylight, for an inch of new. Before the transition to rain, heavy precip may give us 2-5” of dense snowfall. The GFS then predicts 3” of rain overnight. The Euro likes 1”. Wind will be SW 20-30 during the day and WSW 50+ overnight.
Model disagreement on Tuesday makes it hard to predict the rainfall. That rain should switch to snow overnight, for a couple inches of new and an icing disaster for the resorts on Wednesday morning. Snow level 8000′ during the day, 6000′ in the evening, and 5000′ overnight. Rainfall: 1-4”. Snowfall overnight: 1-2”. Wind: WSW 50 during the day and W 50 (disastrous for icing) overnight. The next chance of significant snow on the GFS is Thursday night. The Euro does not have this system, so let’s not count on it!

Road and Mountain Biking
Stay out of Post – it’s too muddy and too freeze-thawy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
