Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Normally we’d be talking about spring skiing and corn snow this time of year, but instead we’re talking about bringing your tire chains and shovel to the resorts with you. The forecast is calling for many inches of snow today into tonight followed by cool weather through Friday morning. Couple of things to start the day: first, today is the last day at Meadows. There is no hiking there tomorrow as it’s employee ski day. Pick somewhere else for you BC shredding. Next, Teacup was grooming this morning, but the groomer broke. They did get some trails done, but no word yet on if they can fix the groomer by tomorrow or not. Today’s groom will get buried fast…

We’re expecting snow all day. The snow level will be 4000′ this morning, 2500′ this afternoon, and as low as 1500′ overnight. About 0.5” water equivalent is forecast during the day today, for 4-6” new snow. Another 0.4-0.5” WE is forecast tonight for another 4-5”. Wind: storm skiing for sure! NW 35 this morning, W 35 most of the day, and W 15 overnight.

Sunday looks like a bluebird pow day. Head to Timberline for lift-serve or your favorite BC spot for a skin. Remember: no hiking at Meadows. The weather features light snow early, partly cloudy weather midday, clouds in the evening, and clearing overnight. Unless the afternoon features unexpectedly strong instability-driven snow showers, there will be just a trace of snow during the day. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ free air freezing level overnight. Wind: W 15 early, W 5-10 in the afternoon, NW 15-20 in the evening, and NW 25-30 overnight.

Monday may start with some orographic flurries, but should turn clear. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. Sunshine sticks around Tuesday and part of Wednesday before yet another late-season snowstorm arrives. 850Mb (5000′) temps remain below 0C through Friday morning. Models hint that they’ll rise late next week along with rain, but that’s really too far out to be certain. Enjoy the last day at Meadows today. Dress warmly for that Pond Skim! Oh, and this forecast will switch to primarily wind forecasting starting next week as we transition to summer sports.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re still on track for a strong and gusty day of westerlies. Moderate westerlies stick around through Monday, and perhaps longer. Quality won’t be great; dynamic weather continues to be forecast through the extended period. Hello, May-uary.

For Saturday, we start with gradients of .07 and .03, but those will quickly ramp up as a low moves inland and transient high pressure builds offshore. By late morning, the wind builds to 27-31 from Mosier to Boardman. Expect a midday jump to 31-35 from Lyle to Rufus, and perhaps to Arlington. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier, will likely be gusty low 20’s. Remember that the high school sailing championships are at the Event Site today. Please avoid the area between Wells Island and the Sandbar so the racers can perform at their best. After 5pm or so, the wind falls to gusty 26-32 east of The Dalles with gusty 21-24 from Lyle to Doug’s (where sprinkles and clouds will have arrived) and 13-16 in the drizzly western Gorge. River flow is 216kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 53F.

Sunday starts with light wind in the western Gorge and westerlies at 9-11 east of The Dalles. Westerlies build to gusty 17-21 from Viento to Rufus in the afternoon with 11-14 at Stevenson and also east of Rufus. High temp: 54F. Monday starts with 8-11 in the western Gorge and 15-18 east of The Dalles. Models currently call for gusty 23-26 from The Dalles to Arlington in the afternoon with 11-14 west of The Dalles. High temp: 55F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Sunday will be mostly dry with scattered afternoon sprinkles. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 50’s (record chill) later. Light westerlies most of the day. Moderate in the evening. 53% chance of rainbows. Monday starts with a few sprinkles and turns dry and partly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light westerlies. 88% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting this summer, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Speaking of trails… it’s too muddy to ride them right now, and it will stay that way for a while. If you ride wet, sloppy trails, you will do significant and potentially permanent damage. Please don’t. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Post: snow on the upper part of Eldorado. Recommendation: ride gravel roads and pavement for a while until the trail systems dry out.

Feed the monks at 11am and work in the yard for a bit with some real nice people. OMTM has a gravel ride at Japanese Hollow tomorrow. Find more information on their Strava group.
