Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies stick around for the next four days as morning marine clouds combine with offshore high pressure and a heat low in the desert. This setup is locked in and stable, so what you see is what you get!

Today (it’s Saturday) starts with clouds in the west and sun over much of the region. Gradients at 7am (I slept in!) were 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc). Westerlies are responding with 24-28 from Viento to Mosier, 10-13 near Stevenson, and 15-18 (mostly) to the east. Westerlies hold at 24-27ish from Viento to Mosier through late morning. Models then hint at impacts from warming in the metro area: the western Gorge, from Stevenson to Swell, dips to gusty 18-22. Mosier to Avery continues at 24-27. Rufus, longing for a breeze, joins the fun mid-afternoon, and Arlington jumps in late in the day. River flow is 193kcfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp for Hood River is 85F.

Sunday starts with 22-25 from Viento to Moiser with 7-10 east and west of that stretch. Midday westerlies rise to 24-27 from Moiser to Avery with 20-23 west of there and 7-10 to the east. Afternoon sees Rufus added to the fun (24-27) and Arlington (24-27) in the evening. High temp: 83F.

Monday starts with 22-25 from Viento to Mosier and stays that way. The wind fills in out to Rufus mid-afternoon. Arlington stays lighter, maxing out at 9-12. Tuesday looks nearly identical to Monday. That said, models start to show more spread in max temps and overall picture about that time, so things could change. There’s a hint of stronger wind combined with some cooling on Wednesday. Have a fabulous holiday weekend, and remember that personal use fireworks have been banned all across the Gorge. Stay safe!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed”.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.
