Saturday. Exciting weather: sunrises n’ sunsets, maybe some thunder, maybe some rain, and yes, wind.

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

Although it looks the same out there today as it did yesterday, the overall weather picture is shifting to a much different pattern. That said, it looks like we’ll still see enough wind over the next few days to get at least some of you on the water every day. As for today… our 7am gradients were .08 (pdx-dls), .04 (dls-psc) and .32 (eph-dls) with a nice layer of marine clouds in Portland. That’s a good start, but progress will be hampered by a coastal upper level low (ULL) and a cold front approaching during the day.

Expect 15-18 from Swell to Arlington this morning. The wind will pick up to 21-24 by noon from Cascade Locks all the way east, and pick up a bit more to 24-28 from Lyle to Rufus this afternoon. Cold fronts tend to depress the wind near Hood River and leave it untouched at Cascade Locks, meaning we should see 16-19 from Swell to Mosier this afternoon with 22-25 at Stevenson. Good day for the Blowout, eh!

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

That previously mentioned ULL sits off the coast on Sunday for a lighter start. Expect 10-13 or less from Hood River eastward early. We’ll see the wind stay in the less-than-13 zone for much of the day before picking up to gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon.

Monday looks like 5-10 early with 10-13 in the afternoon. The forecast is really up in the air after that, with models struggling to form a consensus.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/LTV/LTV, NW swell 4′ @ 8 seconds. Tomorrow: LTV, W 4 @ 8. Monday: 10-15/LTV/LTV, W 3 @ 8.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have this habit of working on the forecast, getting stuck, and getting up and looking in the fridge for something to snack on. It’s an unconscious habit – often I’ll find myself moving before I realize that I’ve stopped working.

We all do this a lot. The classic example is looking in the fridge over and over, hoping something new will appear. We check our email and our Facebook, hoping for some human interaction or entertainment. And we do this unconsciously, perhaps because our minds are seeking a hit of happy neurotransmitters. See if you can catch yourself next time it happens, and notice what else is going on in your mind. I bet you’ll find you’re distracted by thoughts or trying to avoid experiencing emotions. You might be fascinated by what you see.

Here’s the thing about all this fridge-checking and FB’ing (and trust me, I’m probably more guilty of all this than you!): what we’re looking for might just be inside us. If we’re entertained by our inner world, if we have self-compasion, we’ll spend less time looking for unconscious fulfillment outside ourselves; we’ll sit still longer, be more present with others, and we’ll be able to focus on tasks more easily. Why? Because when we’re comfortable in our own skin, our minds won’t distract us with external searches. And when that happens, we’ll be truly awesome.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re starting the day with mostly clear sky, but we’ll see some high clouds move in late, giving us a decent chance for a colorful sunset. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 80’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks cloudier with temps in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. We’ll be under south flow, giving us a chance of thunderstorms and rain showers late in the day. Light wind early, moderate late, 13% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy to start with a bigger chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid to upper 80’s in the afternoon with relatively high relative humidity. Light wind. 9% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing new to report. There’s still no snow on the trails. Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are still closed due to fire danger. Campfires are still banned in the woods, and you still need to carry water, a shovel and/or a fire extinguisher if you’re traveling on forestland. The road biking forecast picks Sunday and Monday mornings over today. In other bike news – if you have a used bike you no longer need, email me and I’ll help get it to a kid in need and get you a tax writeoff.

Royal Anne Organics: U-Pick Dahlias & Seed garlic

Sometimes you just need a big bunch of flowers. Maybe you need some cheer. Maybe a friend needs some cheer. Head to Hood River U-Pick off Markham Road (4320 Royal Anne Drive) and pick your own big bouquet of flowers. While you’re there, check out the certified organic seed garlic at the same location. Garlic is easy to grow, it’s fun to harvest, and even your black thumb can’t kill it. Haven’t gardened before? Garlic is a great first plant. Get some now and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

If you need something to do today and you have windsport gear, you can check out the Blowout from Stevenson to Hood River with a tentative start time of 11am. The fastest competitors will finish the 17 mile downwind run in about an hour, if you were curious. There’s a trail run in Post Canyon this morning at 8, there’s a women’s bike ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 9, and the movie Surf’s Up plays in Jackson Park tonight.

Cascade Locks is holding sailboat races all weekend long. If you’re near Dufur, check out the Dufur Threshing Bee with Tractor Pulls starting at 1pm today.

Coming up tomorrow, there are three yoga classes that are free or by donation: 9am at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Root Down in Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
