Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky this morning gives way to clouds this afternoon and snow through Sunday. Rain moves in Sunday night and sticks around until Tuesday morning. After that, temps should stay cold enough for snow for a while. All we need is moisture!

Looking at Saturday, there will be plenty of morning sunshine, but it might be filtered through increasing high clouds. Snow moves in around 7pm. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 5000′ during the day, 4500′ when the snow arrives, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for Mt. Hood, for 2-3” dense snow. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning slowly builds to SW 25-45 in the evening and overnight.

Sunday will be snowy all day, but that will transition to mixed precip late evening and rain after midnight. The snow level starts at 4000′ or so, hangs out there all day, climbs to 6000′ late evening, and bumps up to 8000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. 0.1” WE is forecast overnight as mixed precip. Wind: SW 20-45 in the morning, 15-35 during the day, SW 20-45 in the evening, and SW 30-60 after midnight.

All we’ll get on the slopes on Monday is rain, at least until late. The snow level holds between 8000′ and 8500′ all day and doesn’t fall until after midnight. Even then, it only falls to 6000′ and temps at 5000′ stay at +2C. That 6000′ snow level could be overly optimistic! Significant rain is forecast during this time period. Models call for 2-3”. Wind: SW 30-60 all day becoming WSW 30-35 overnight into Tuesday. Additional, lighter rain is forecast Tuesday morning before a transition to snow on Tuesday afternoon.

Models hint at 850mb temps (5000′ or so) remaining well below freezing for the extended period as we fall into NW flow. That will limit moisture some, but it will also keep the snow cold and in good shape. So… the Pineapple Express isn’t great for skiing, but it’s good for the water content of the snowpack and the mitigation of fires this summer. We’ll take it!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong easterlies Saturday morning slowly fade. To start the day, we have 50mph at Rooster, 30-35 at Stevenson, 20-25 at Viento, and 5-10 to the east. Afternoon wind holds at 5-10 in the east, 20-25 at Viento, 30-35 at Stevenson, and falls to 35-45 at Rooster. River flow is 144kcfs, river temp is 36F, and high temp forecast is 44F. Expect showery weather along with your Sunday wind. The day starts with 25-30 at Cascade Locks, 20-25 at Rooster, and east wind to the east. The wind turns to west 10-15 at Rooster and E 10 at Cascade Locks in the afternoon. High temp: not 47F as predicted! Monday starts with easterlies and turns to westerlies most places with lots of rain all day. You’ll find SW 15-230 at Rooster in the morning and W 10-20 in the afternoon. Stevenson: E 10-15 in the morning and W 15-25 in the afternoon. Far eastern Gorge: SW wind at 10-20 in the afternoon after an E 5-10 start. Central Gorge: calm.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Cycling

FREEZE THAW: It rained enough this week that sub-freezing overnight temps and daytime sunshine will render the trails susceptible to damage. Please, just don’t. You can take a week off riding while the temps moderate. Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
