Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today looks like a wonderful day to hit the Mt. Hood groom. It’ll be awesome packed powder everywhere. Our weekend forecast snow totals are down to just traces, so the conditions will be similar, if a touch harder, through Monday.

For Saturday, we’ll have mostly cloudy sky this morning and partly cloudy or sunny sky later. A trace of snow will fall overnight. The snow level will be 0′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Light and variable wind all day turns to NW 15 after midnight.

Sunday looks cloudy with scattered flurries early, partly cloudy or sunny midday, and more cloudy overnight. Models disagree, with the GFS calling for a trace of snow Sunday night and the ECMWF calling for 2-3” of new. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 1500′ midday, and 0-500′ overnight. Wind will be NW 15 early, WNW 25 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight.

Monday looks partly cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 0-500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ after midnight. Wind Monday will be W 20 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 after midnight. Tuesday looks sunny with the free air freezing level at 0′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight.

The long-range forecast has a pattern change starting Thursday afternoon. Low pressure systems moving in from the SW bring warmer, wetter air to the mountain. Models aren’t agreeing on details, but it looks like the snow level is going to be higher than it has been recently – somewhere in the 5000′-6500′ range. Periods of rain are possible. That means you should enjoy the excellent snow quality now and consider it a bonus if the precip stays all snow at the tail end of next week!

Random Morning Thoughts

Just thought y’all should know that after over ten years of writing this forecast, I realized that I could run it through the spellchecker. Yep. Took me ten years to figure that out. Ten years of Thrusday, widn, and ot/fo. Sorry about that!

This raises a point: we often miss solutions that are right in front of us. This often happens because we didn’t grow up with the solution; it’s not hard-wired into us as a natural first response. For example, a Millennial’s first response to needing to remember something might be to pull out a phone and take a photo. I would be more likely to write the thing on my hand or a piece of paper.

We don’t just do this in the practical realm. We do it in our responses to people and situations. We repeat the same things over and over, because that’s what we know. When we intentionally try something out (which will likely provoke anxiety), we give rise to the possibility of new outcomes. Like correct spelling. That’s a good one. May you be flexible. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Saturday starts with E wind at 5-10 and switches to very light west wind after 2pm. Sunday starts light and variable. In the afternoon, the wind will pick up to W 18-22 east of Mosier and 10-13 west of Mosier. Monday looks like light west wind all day and Tuesday currently looks like E 25-30.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There are high clouds out there and celestial bodies. That’s the forecast for today. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light wind. No rainbows. Sunday starts off mostly cloudy and turns partly to mostly cloudy in the afternoon. Light rain or snow may or may not fall overnight, depending on which model you prefer/believe. Temps will be near 30 early and near 50 in the afternoon. Light west wind early, moderate west wind later. 18% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light wind. No rainbows. Next chance of significant rain is Thursday afternoon.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve seen some photos from the lower half of Syncline, and that looks good. However, if temps dip below freezing, we’ll be in a freeze-thaw cycle. So, if it was below freezing last night, do not ride today. Other than that, I’m not sure where you’d go mountain biking right now. There’s lots of snow scattered about. You could go for a mixed surface ride around the Heights and the Valley.

Upcoming Events

There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am today. The last Cold Lap ride of the season is today at 3pm at Dirty Fingers. On Sunday, there’s by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 11am, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
