Saturday: Enjoy the wind today. Less tomorrow.

First off, there are a couple of events happening today: Big Winds has a parking lot sale on SUP boards, so that’s cool. There’s apparently, maybe or maybe not, some sort of team paddle race happening with the Gorge Downwind Champs today. That would be at the Hood River Marina, I believe, but their website…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

That would be at the Hood River Marina, I believe, but their website isn’t all that clear. But be aware of that. There’s also a kiteboarding safety lecture (and free beer) at the Event Site tonight, and Stoked Roasters’ 3rd anniversary party tonight. I guess that was more than a couple… Okay. On to the forecast. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

This morning, Saturday, started out with a nice marine layer to the west of Hood River and sunshine to the east. Gradients at 7am were .08 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc) with the river temp at 69 degrees and the flow at The Dalles at 131kcfs. We’ll see westerlies at 17-20 to start the day from Viento to Mosier. A quick pickup to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier seems reasonable, and the westerlies should build to 23-26 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Beaches further east will be lighter, so if you’re camping out at Roosevelt, come on back!

Sunday starts off with westerlies at 10-13 from Viento to Swell, and probably at Mosier too. If the models are correct, the wind will die off midday and return at 5-10 late in the evening. Let’s temper the model forecast with a temp forecast for Sunday: 82 in Portland, 88 in Hood River. Keeping that in mind, it’s worth tossing out that we may see 10-13 all day with a late afternoon surge of 13-16. If there’s wind, it will be strongest near Swell in the morning and from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. So plan accordingly.

Looks like we’ll see a deeper marine push on Monday as weathery stuff happens along the coast. Expect 16-19 from Viento to Mosier early, 21-24 in the same stretch midday, and 23-27 after 3pm from Stevenson to The Dalles. As of right now (of course, because I’ll be in Portland all day), Tuesday looks like 26-30 all day long. Fingers crossed for that!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

With so much violence happening in the world, it’s important to give yourself a respite from the constant influx of negative information. Gosh, even talking about it in this way makes me feel a little sick. Some people escape by going windsurfing (ME!) some do drugs, and some play practical jokes like putting pot/weed/mota/ganja/marijuana in the water supply for a town.

Now, that’s not the best thing to do, forcing other people to use your coping mechanism. You could try hiding in a cave like this starfish, but eventually someone will force you out of that cave. You could augment your world by playing Pokemon Go. Haven’t tried yet (I have not). Here’s a bit of information about the app to get you started.

Anyway, that was my morning dose of humor, and the reason why this forecast is later than 8am (my target time). You have an awesome day today, okay?

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mighty sunny this morning in Hood River, and I had to get way up out of my chair to see the marine clouds deep in the hole. Expect sunshine today with temps in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny with temps in the mid 50’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Very light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny with temps in the low 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like a real nice morning for a bike ride with cool temps and light wind.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the Laser North American Championship sailboat races in Cascade locks, and those continue tomorrow. Northwest Trails Alliance has a trailbuilding party and campout today and tomorrow at Lewis River. There’s a Gorge Cup windsurfing race in Hood River today, a Historic Highway parade in Mosier, and a mountain cleanup at Meadows this morning. Big Winds has a parking lot sale on SUP boards all day today.

Coming up this evening, the movie Inside Out plays at Movies in the Park Hood River at dusk – it shows again in Odell Monday night. Back to tonight, there’s a kiteboarding safety talk at the Event Site at 8pm. There’s free beer at that event. Stoked Roasters has their 3rd anniversary party tonight at the waterfront.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
