Saturday: cloudy, muggy, breezy day!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Statement on Racial Justice

Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems.

I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.

I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

A weak weather system moves through during the day Saturday setting the Gorge up for a round of moderate, gusty westerlies. High pressure starts to rebuild offshore on Sunday. That leads to varying westerlies for most of the rest of the week.

For Saturday, the early gradient tin the western Gorge was .06. that’s enough for 13-16 from Viento to Doug’s to start the day with light west wind other locations west of The Dalles and light and variable wind east of there. After this weather system moves through midday, westerlies pick up. We’ll still have clouds in the west, and that will keep the wind in the 12-15 range west of Lyle. From Lyle to Arlington, you can expect gusty 22-26 after 11am or so. River flow is 282kcfs and temp is 59 degrees.

Clouds in the west on Sunday morning give the desert a jump on heating. Westerlies start the day in post-frontal mode, with 12-15 from Viento to Arlington and 5-10 in Stevenson. We’ll see the wind build to 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon with 13-16 at Rufus and light wind east of there.

Monday sees high pressure start to push inland. Upper flow turns northerly. This is good for the coast and Sauvie’s, and not so great for the Gorge. We’ll see 12-15 from Stevenson to Swell to start the day with light westerlies in Hood River and Mosier and calm wind east of there. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. We’ll probably see lighter wind on Tuesday as temps rise near 90. Cooler air filters in to the west side on Wednesday for a windier day.
